For what it's worth, on ANYGIVENSATURDAY the MVFC thread for week 3 pics has nearly 30 replies and not one has picked WIU to win. Ya gotta think they know their conference better than we do. GO CATS!

FCS GAME OF THE WEEK
MONTANA STATE AT WESTERN ILLINOIS
Saturday, 2 p.m. EDT
Like JMU, this is just a really terrible line laid by the boys at the sportsbook. We talk often about how FCS Experts (like myself) are actually much better handicappers than the guys who set the lines, so I'm not surprised to discover that this line is just flat wrong. Western Illinois is a Valley team, and Valley teams might regularly have a stylistic advantage against Big Sky teams, but MSU is a contrarian Western team with an established playoff pedigree. Western Illinois (0-2) looks listless on offense and kind of average on defense -- it already lost to North Alabama, 26-17, before losing to FBS Colorado State last week. (Meanwhile, North Alabama turned around and lost to Montana 61-17.)
Often times, handicapping is extremely complicated, but in rare cases, it's simple. Montana State is good. Western Illinois is not. Back Montana State to cover the short number on the road. I anticipate a double-digit win.
Pick: Montana State -3

Yeah, this just isn't difficult to me. We're playing a team we beat last year, that same team lost 23 seniors including QB, RB, WR, NFL DT. We, on the other hand, haven't lost much. We just dominated a top 15 ranked team.Rich K wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2019 3:50 pmFrom Hero Sports:

We're going to win, and quite frankly, it shouldn't even be close.

I went ahead and started my espn+ subscription today and am currently watching the WIU-Northern Alabama game from opening weekend. The team I am watching is not what was in Bozeman last year. WIU needs to step forward quite a bit from then if they want to make this game close.bobcat99 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2019 4:29 pmYeah, this just isn't difficult to me. I like this ESPN+ thing. I saw that I can watch the USA basketball games from this summer too. They didn't do great, but still fun to watch.
Maybe if enough people write to the BSC, they'd switch to this for all the games? It's a lot better product.

Re: MSU vs WIU predictions
MSU leads the series 3-0, but its spooky how the scores keep getting closer, when the coaching gets better. Solomonson won the first game by about 25. Then Hysell won the second by about 15. Then Choate only won by 3 last year. I’m not sure it means anything, but it looks like a bad thing for MSU.
MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

All superstitions aside, let's just hope the better team wins because there is no doubt in my mind the Bobcats are the better team right now.TomCat88 wrote: ↑Thu Sep 12, 2019 5:39 pmMSU leads the series 3-0, but its spooky how the scores keep getting closer, when the coaching gets better. Re: MSU vs WIU predictions
This game is making me very nervous. Almost like going to Northern Colorado to play.
From WIU’s Game Notes:
“Home Cooking | Playing at Hanson Field has been a tough task for non-conference teams in recent years. The Leathernecks are 34-4 against non-MVFC teams since 1999, including a current 12-game win streak.”
We need to snap that streak — it's there for a reason. It means it is a difficult place to win, whatever the reasons.

Choate too, is concerned about this game. He said he told the players before the season that this is one of the biggest games of the year. He said that due to how MSU’s played on the road. MSU is 5-12 on the road (13-7 at home) in the Choate era. Wins over UM (2), UNC, PSU, and UND. 3-4 following a home win on the road. Wins over UM (2) and PSU. Throw out those UM wins (a game that’s easy to get up for) and MSU has been really flat on the road. 3-12 and 1-4. That has to get fixed.

Re: MSU vs WIU predictions
I think he's concerned in the sense that you have to respect your opponent and you don't look past anyone. This team is good and if we screw around we could lose. But no chance in hell Choate doesn't expect to win this game. And I can assure you if his life depended on it and he was forced to make a prediction he'd have the Cats winning.iaafan wrote: ↑Fri Sep 13, 2019 7:04 amChoate too, is concerned about this game. For me personally it's not that I don't respect WIU. I do. I think they're a better team than they showed a couple weeks ago for sure. But I think the Cats are a better team and I think this is a game that will set the tone for the rest of the season. Frankly in the grand scheme of things, based on what Choate and his staff are trying to build; this is a must-win game. In the past this very game is the one where the Cats had a letdown. I can see many posters on this board are expecting it again and I don't blame them. But from what I've seen this isn't one of those Cat teams.
I fully expect us to win this game by a few scores.
God it's going to be a long day today and morning tomorrow!

Re: MSU vs WIU predictions
This game has all the makings of a trap game. MSU coming off a big win, difficult travel schedule, low energy environment, WIU is better than most people think. WIU could have some starters back that have not played this year, if they do then their run game will be stronger than expected. WIU has a O and D line which can hold them in the game at anyrate.
I still think the Cats overcome all of this and get a win, but expect a close hard fought game that goes deep into the 4th quarter.

Re: MSU vs WIU predictions
This quote from Lewis Kidd says it all about this team. This is exactly why I think we win this weekend and win big.
On finding motivation this week: "Like we've been saying all week, it doesn't really matter, the atmosphere. If you need to be motivated you're probably not in the right room, not doing the right thing. I think we're all capable, we're a mature enough team to bring our own energy and feed off the energy of each other. It doesn't matter if we're playing in front of 50,000 people or a thousand. We should be playing at a high level no matter what."
