The most fascinating stat for me is the yards Kevin Kassis accumulated as a WR in our system over the past 4 years. Imagine if we had a semblance of a passing game for the previous 3 years. He was lights out as a receiver and I'm so glad he is getting his recognition as an all time great! =D^

He most definitely would have been put up a Tanner Bleskin numbers, maybe even surpassed Bleskin.

Alrighty, as I do every year. I will be updating records throughout the season as players approach or move up career and/or season records lists. AKA, the Troy Andersen Record Watch list. haha, he pretty much broke every season record available last year. Please let me know if there is anything I missed, needs to be corrected, or added. A few career lists are in play to start the season:

MSU Career Coaching Victories
1. 70- Rob Ash
2. 47- Sonny Holland
3. 41- Cliff Hysell
4. 40- Mike Kramer
5. 36- Schubert R. Dyche
6. 31- Tony Storti
6. 31- Jim Sweeney
8. 30- Herb Agocs
9. 28- Jeff Choate
9. 28- G. Ott Romney

***cough, cough... 4-0 vs the griz… cough, cough***
Choate has a legitimate chance at the top 5 for MSU coaching victories next season. Much less likely, but still attainable, is surpassing Kramer for #4, and Cliff Hysell for #3 (this would require 14 wins, basically a national title season).
I'll go a half-step further. If Choate doesn't end the season in sole possession of #5, or higher, the season is a disappointment.

Agreed. 9 wins gets him to sole possession and that pretty much means winning one playoff game, or sneaking into the playoffs and winning two. I know it's a tougher schedule next year, but even 9 would probably be considered a little bit of a disappointment.

Assuming Choate finishes the final 2 years of his current contract, he needs just 7 wins per year to move into 3rd place ahead of Hysell. That should be a gimme. 10 wins per season moves him ahead of Holland which is a little tougher but certainly possible if we're in the playoffs both seasons.
Hopefully he's around beyond that, though.

He has a legitimate shot at being #2 in two years. It’ll take two really good seasons, but could definitely happen.

I’d be surprised if he ever surpasses Ash. Not because he’s not good enough, but because that’d take an additional 3 seasons probably, and I don’t know if he’ll be around for 5 more years. We’ll see though, hopefully he is.

Yeah, I don't see him sticking around to get 70. Let's say he averages 11 wins over the next 3 seasons, that gets him to 61 and within striking distance the following year. That would be four straight really good seasons including this past one, and I don't think there's any way MSU can keep him at that point unless they can really pay him a lot of money. Like maybe triple his current salary, if not more. I just think with the sustained success that would mean, he's going to get tons of attention.

I love the trend, if we can keep some key assistants in place, we'll keep rolling in the right direction.

Mslacatfan, greatly appreciate your efforts in maintaining this topic every year. One worthy record that is missing in this years thread is Individual - Rushing Yards, Season.

Please correct me if I’m wrong. But I’m pretty sure that nobody cracked that list.... which is pretty insane considering this year broke the record for most yards rushing as a team.

Off the top of my head- the individual top 10 list starts somewhere around 1,100 yards or so. The most an individual had this season was around 8 or 900 yards, Logan jones i believe.

My misunderstanding #-o . Your record watch is about current individuals or the team in, or threatening, the top ten lists. Hopefully, II will stay healthy next year and make a run at the season rushing record.

Just curious @mslacatfan but would it be difficult for you to look up all playoff W/L records for coaches? Or at least the most recent ones? I think that'd be interesting to see. Choate is obviously 3-2 in the playoffs now (1-1 last year, 2-1 this year). Does anyone remember Ash's record? Kramer's? Did Hysell or the Pearl ever make the playoffs?

Mike Kramer 1-3
Rob Ash 2-4

What's encouraging is the (assumed) increase in playoff appearances/games by the three most recent on that list. Four, six, now five over just 4 seasons. Plus obviously Choate having a winning playoff record, which this one season established. Let's see that continue. Encouraging.

Only 12 teams made the playoffs in 1982. Expanded to 16 in 1986. Then expanded again to 20 in 2010, and 24 in 2013. Ash & Choate both benefit from a much easier cut. If you eliminated the “play-in” games, you’d get a somewhat different result.

Good point. Kramer made it in when there were 16 teams three different years. The first two, his teams were not seeded, so they probably wouldn't have made it into a 12 team field. In 2006, he beat Furman and lost to App St. If it was a 12 team field when he was coaching, his record may have been 0-1.

Ash only played in the first round once, and he lost (SDSU in 2014). The other three times he had a bye and hosted the second round game, so he probably would've made the playoffs. I think Ash's record would probably improve to 2-3 if it was a 12 team field and wouldn't be different if it was a 16 team field.

Choate wouldn't have made the playoffs last year but would have this year, so his record would be 2-1.

Obviously there are other factors that could've come into play, but this is a very rough guess if I was trying to compare apples to apples.

Kramer’s first two got the auto-bid. Ash had three auto-bids.
