I'm not really surprised. Rovig couldn't win the job from Andersen, was completely over-matched in his one outing against a quality opponent, saw his coaching staff attempt to replace him with a transfer in the off-season, and was then placed in an open competition against a RSFR despite long insistence that he was "the guy." The optimism around him never made sense to me.

Bauman is going to take his lumps. That just needs to be understood. If the offense runs according to design, they won't have to lean on him too hard. But his skill-set is a much better marriage with this offense than anyone else's on the roster. The Cats are and want to be a run heavy offense. They need someone to force safeties out of the box and/or make teams pay for stacking the box. Bauman's arm is capable of doing that.

Alright. We have a QB! And it's a guy with sky-high potential, too. Baumann can really sling it.

Let's hope he grows into the next great 4-year Bobcat starter!

I think Matt will call the game to his strengths. I think some of the play calls in practice were evaluation plays.

Now sorry for caring about Cat/griz too much. I've been properly chastised by the coach of the other team. :-^

I like it. I think since Bauman was coming from a smaller school, his learning curve was steeper. It stands to reason that he wasn't as good during spring ball since it was less than a year since he'd graduated from a small high school. But given his athleticism, it makes sense that he would make quick progress since the spring. I'm excited the decision has been made, though I would have been good with either guy. Hope Casey continues to make strides and the offense rallies behind him.

Great decision. Excellent rationale. Fantastic response from Tucker. Good point about needing two quarterbacks to get through the season.
I have not had a chance to hear Tucker's response but I REALLY hope he stays in the program. Guys like him are invaluable and everything you want in your backup qb, a team-first guy who can step in with little to no notice and run your offense. This is the guy you want holding the clipboard which allows your freshman to redshirt and develop. He has been the biggest supporter of the program and culture ever since he signed here and does amazing things throughout the community. I am thrilled with Bauman and when it clicks for this young man, watch out! I really hope Tucker sticks it out but I don't blame him if he doesn't.......

I’m surprised you’re so positive here. You seemed to be Tucker’s biggest advocate here, telling all of us how SDSU shouldn’t come into play against Rovig and posting stat after stat after stat in support of why Rovig is so much better than anyone realizes. I said a long time ago Rovig isn’t your guy even though the coaching staff really wanted him to be. The job was all his to lose and he lost it, again. But it’s funny how supportive you are of this decision after all the Rovig rah rah you’ve given here.

Not happening

Interesting if correct. Where did this depth chart come from? If it is correct as of today are Thelan and Knight so far behind that it couldn't change as the season moves on?
The list is one poster’s ranking. As for the freshman, I would not even consider them as possible candidates for the year. Just too young and not enough time in the system. They would have to be a freak athlete like Murray or Troy and those are very rare.
Too young?? Not enough time in the system???

Why do you always have to go negative?
How is that negative?? 99% of the time True Freshman QBs are not ready to step in and start, therefore too young and inexperienced. Part of your issue with our QBs is that you expect them to be ready to take over in season 1 or 2. As has been said many times, that doesn't happen very often.

I am STOKED. As much as I loved watching TA, it's going to be nice to have consistency in actually throwing the ball and utilizing our excellent WR corps.

Don't let this distract you from the fact that the griz blew a 22-0 lead.

I suppose if you think that Rovig is a pretty good player (as I do) or a very good player (as iaafan seems to), the fact that Bauman improved enough to overtake him in such a short time, that's actually more reason to like him than if he had simply beaten out a bad player.

Why would he not be supportive? He's a fan of MSU. I felt Tucker would be the guy and it appears Casey showed better...so I'm going to now put my full support behind him. Bobcat fans are allowed to be positive about any development that happens with the team. Why do you care?

I heard neither were blowing anyone’s minds and both had their moments of struggle, but the coaches think Bauman has more upside potential. That’s from people at every practice. I actually think your coach made the right decision, but there’s going to be a lot of wtf moments on the field as he’s young and still processing. I think the potential is there.

It’s more the irony in blowing any way that the Choate wind blows:

iaa: Tucker’s the guy, Tucker’s the guy, here’s every stat ever to prove it to all of you doubters that Tucker is way better than anyone realizes, SDSU doesn’t count, look at what he did against Wagner, Tucker is the guy I’m telling you!

Choate: Bauman is our starter

iaa: I love this decision! I said all along Bauman was an absolute stud!

It’s funny is all.

There are about 300 posts saying this same thing, why do you think anybody gives 2 bit about whether you think coach mad a good or a bad decision.

Honest question, if we had the next freshman phenomenon on our roster(examples: lulay, Denarius McGhee) does Choate have the ability to recognize it. Choate is a great coach, happy as hell to have him. However, I don't think he can recognize a good qb if he hit him in the ass from 50 yards out. Have a feeling that Choate would choose a qb that has a year or two in the system over someone that is flat out gifted. If the next Lulay is on our roster, I don't think he would be given a chance. What do you all think?
I think you are creating your own narrative. There isn't any evidence of this.
Ok. . . Guess I'll try and make my case. When Choate came on he had HIS guy he brought in (Bruggman). Clear from day one that he would be the starter, Jordan Hoy, who turned out to be a decent qb leaves program.

Bruggman flops, contines to start over half the season over a much more athletic and talented murray (who is only 17),

Next year murray does better with decision making, but fails to make strides in his passing. Not really a traditional qb, but a freak athlete that can make plays with his feet.

Last year we basically had to teach our most athletic player how to be a d 1 qb. All this suggests our coach struggles with recruitment aND development of the QB position. He had admitted so himself. Don't see how I'm creating my own narrative
So going back to your original statement, who was the next freshman phenom on the roster (Lulay, McGhee) that Choate did2n't recognize?
Hoy was a much better option tHan Bruggman, Choate basically ran Hoy out of town.

Was clear that murray was a better option than bruggman, bruggman played until late in the season.

I would argue last season that Rovig was a better option until his injury.

Didn't say there had been a second coming of lulay during his tenure. But choates assessment of qb has been suspect, in my mind he has failed to put the best QB on the field three times. Obviously speculation on my part, bUT seems like he values a field general over talent in this position.
Hoy has not been a clear success at Lamar or Old Dominion. 9 games played with only about 600 passing yards and 500 rushing yards. I am not sure he even played in their playoff game. I am not sure he could have beaten Murray, Andersen, Bruggman or even Bauman in a competition.

With Choate picking Bauman, I think it is clear that Choate will play the person who gives MSU the best chance to win.
