Ryan Cole visit...

Post by Obzerver » Thu Feb 03, 2005 9:16 pm

Cole will be in town this weekend and then he's suppose to visit ISU. rtb has told me MSU is on semesters as is ISU. So, if he chooses MSU or ISU over EWU(who is on qtrs.) he would have to wait to enroll until Summer or Fall, correct? That would mean no Spring Football, correct?

Correct, at this point any student not currently enrolled and going to classes cannot take part in spring drills. He will have to wait until Fall if he were to come to MSU.

This was in the Port Orchard Independent 2/5
As much as I'd love to see EWU get him, Kramer is one smooth talker(better than Wulff) and Bozeman is a nice, very nice area. Now someone in here said, who would want to live in Cheney instead of Bozeman. Remember that in the time it takes to get from Walmart to Bobcat Stadium, a student can get from Cheney to downtown Spokane(300,000+)

Cole, Beavers will part company.

Ryan Cole’s career at Oregon State University is over.
Roland Cole, Ryan’s father, confirmed this week his son has asked for and been given a release from his scholarship.
“He’s going to leave Oregon State,” Roland Cole said from his home Thursday afternoon. “As of March 31, he is gone from OSU.”
Cole, who graduated from South Kitsap High School in 2002 after a record-shattering grid career for the Wolves, decided to leave after finding out in a meeting with coach Mike Riley he would not be the featured back in the Beavers’ offense next season.
“We sat down and asked him, ‘What do you have in store for Ryan,’” Roland Cole said.
The answer they got was that Riley is going to a two-back system that will feature the quarterback and receivers and Ryan’s main duties would be as a blocking back.
Consequently, Ryan decided to leave OSU and try his luck elsewhere.
“I don’t like the fact that he is walking away from a Division I scholarship,” Roland Cole said. “But we have to do what’s best for Ryan.”
Cole, who was recruited to OSU and signed by then-coach Dennis Erickson, played two full seasons for the Beavers after redshirting his freshman year.
Last year, Cole rushed for 210 yards on 80 carries and scored twice. He also caught 10 passes for 77 yards.
During Cole’s freshman year, he ran just 15 times for 82 yards.
Cole’s best game came Oct. 23 against Washington State, as he racked up 102 yards on 12 carries, including a 79-yard scoring run, the longest of his college career.
Calls to the Oregon State sports information office were not returned.
Roland Cole said Erickson recruited Ryan to be Stephen Jackson’s backup at the time and said he would get his chance to start once Jackson was gone.
However, Erickson left the following year to take the head-coaching job with the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers and Mike Riley was brought in to replace him.
Riley, who coached the Beavers in 1997-1998 before leaving for a similar job with the San Diego Chargers, replaced Erickson and has moved the program to a more pass-oriented offense.
“Riley wants him to stay,” Roland Cole said. “But we’re going back into the recruiting mode. He is being recruited again.”
Cole will transfer to a Division I-AA school so he can play next year. If he were to transfer to a Division I school, he would have to sit out a year and have just one more year of eligibility left.
OSU has given Ryan permission to talk with three I-AA schools — Eastern Washington University, Idaho State University and Montana State University. Ryan has already taken a recruiting trip to EWU, MSU this weekend and will visit ISU soon, his father said.
Eastern, for a variety of reasons, would appear to be the best fit for now.
First, EWU is on the same quarter class schedule OSU uses and Cole could be enrolled in classes in April and be eligible to participate in spring football.
Secondly, EWU went 9-4 last year and advanced to the second round of the I-AA playoffs but lost both of its running backs to graduation.
In addition, Cole’s high school coach, D.J. Sigurdson, is a graduate of EWU.
Idaho State went 3-8 last year and its leading rusher was freshman Josh Barnett, who carried 112 times for 476 yards.
Montana State’s leading rusher was junior Justin Domineck (183-736).
Cole was a two-time all-state running back at South. In three years, he accumulated 4,698 yards rushing on 508 carries and scored 71 times.
Coles first thought of transferring last year but decided to stay when Riley assured father and son that Ryan would be the featured back along with Dwight Wright.
Wright ended up with the majority of carries last year, prompting Ryan to explore his options.
“He’s proved he can play,” Roland Cole said. “Hopefully, where ever he lands, he will get to play based on his talent.”

Was Cole at either of the hoop games? Did the football team all go on Sat. night or was that just a Thursday phenomena

One of my business associates is a "Beaver Booster"--big time. Season ticket holder in the expensive seats and has made every OSU game in Corvalius for the last decade. He says Cole is the real deal and is very sorry to see him go. He also said that in addition to being a fine football player (he may have been the number 1 running back recruit coming out of high school in Washington State) he is a great kid.
Talk to him Junior. Make him Bobcat believer just like you became!

Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to have good ol' Dennis Erickson place a phone call or two? He was the coach that recruited him to OSU, maybe he could be swayed our way by some encouraging words from Coach.

I'm stoked that he will be visiting this weekend and not last. Bringing a recruit to Cat-friz is always a deal-maker, and the atmosphere at this basketball game will top anything he will ever see in Cheney, football included.

Obzerver, thanks for the article and the updates. While you do have a good point about Spokane being really close to Cheney, I have to ask: is that something you really want to use as a positive???

BC, let me rephrase that; In the time it takes to go from Walmart to Bobcat Stadium, he can be even further away from Spokane...

Nice!

Don't sell Wolff short on his ability to sweet-talk recruits, though. He must be a heck of a salesman considering the talent he has assembled in Cheney, which just can't be an easy place to recruit to.

Helcat72, it is being reported that he is at ISU as of last night. Perhaps he is leaving there and stopping in to see you guys at MSU...

I got my information from Josh Wanago at trhe basketball game last week. I don't think he keeps up with all of the recruiting that is being done. It could be that he won't visit until next week. I do like the contrast between Bozeman and Pocatello! It's good that he visited Pocatello first!

I hope he's not into hunting and fishing; it'd be hard to take Bozo over southeast Idaho in that respect.

As long as he's not Mormon, it shouldn't be much of a contest if it comes down to a decision between the towns of Pocatello and Bozeman.

Sorry Cardiac, but I grew up in the Gallatin; I'll take the Southfork of the Snake over the Yellowstone or Madison and the size of the antlers in southeast Idaho doesn't compare unless you get back into someplace like Cowboy Heaven adjacent to the cable guys place, if you can make the hike or have horses. I think many of the kids growing up prefer Steelhead and Salmon given a choice; plus, I don't enjoy the Hyde or neoprene hatch...I imagine when I get to Bozo tomorrow there'll be more people on "my" old holes than I want to put up with, but I'll take my kids out there anyway...that's why I semi-retired to the Flathead--it's not very long and I'm someplace in British Columbia using plugs similar to what I drag around Flaming Gorge or on a charter on Lake Michigan when I go there.

If Cole is as good as advertised, then this is pretty interesting. If so, then Cole shouldn't be factoring in playing time in his decision, because it seems like he would start no matter where he goes in the Big Sky, except maybe UM with Hilliard.
The other thing is that if he picks MSU or EW, who are pretty even right now, it will give one the edge. Not that UM and PSU aren't capable of winning the league.
All four have questions, MSU: sp. teams/secondary, although I think the secondary will be adequate. EW: defense. The off. doesn't keep them off the field. UM: QB/WRs/Defense, but have EW and PSU at home. The defense was saved by turnovers and if they can repeat that, they'll be better than last year. PSU: New QB, but these guys might surprise everyone. They have 4 of 7 at home, but roadies at UM and EW.

I'm guessing it is between EW and MSU and that it is a tough decision. Kramer vs. Wulff is even; Lulay vs. Meyer even; both o-lines are good; facilities prob. goes to MSU; EW is closer to home; MSU gets more attention from fans/media; Bozeman has more going on than Cheney; Spokane is close to EW; Bozeman is easier on the eyes in more ways than one--ooo-la-la!

So are you saying you don't have to put up with the Hyde or Neoprene hatch in Idaho? I would agree that the Salmon\Steelhead component is definitely a huge plus (Because I'm addicted), but overall quality of hunting and fishing statewide, I'd take The state of Montana over the state of Idaho anyday.

Great time to be a BOBCAT!
