This game doesn't deserve a full good/bad/ugly thread so here goes:
Good:
- FCS win
- Lots of game time for the backups
Bad:
- Offense gave up another TD
- Wilson only got one pass attempt - Jordan Reed didn't get any snaps
Ugly:
- A FG and a 3 and out by the 1st team offense
Certainly seems like he's now the 3rd string QB...
If we didn't need to play the starters for so long to get a more than comfortable lead he would have made it in but the fact that Chance got multiple drives means he's definitely QB2.
However, if all we're going to have the backups do is hand it off we can put anyone out there. Sportsmanship is one thing but at some point we need to develop these guys.
Eastwood, did not make it. Ball out! Recovered, by Montana State!! The Bobcats hold!!! The Bobcats hold!!!
Instead of the usual pass-happy offense for ISU, they're playing like MSU today with twice as many rushing yards as passing yards. MSU shouldn't lose to ISU, but if they show up and play sloppy in the first half like they have been doing recently on the road it could be a lot closer than we'd like it to be.
Mercyhurst was pretty solid. Run defense was impressive but thought we passed it well when Tommy made solid throws. Our d-line really bullied them in the second half and special teams and kicking game continues to get better. Mercyhurst was 100% better than Maine and thought we did well. Hopefully we can ride the momentum pf this team though out the whole season.
Rushed 3, gave time for receivers to get 15 yds downfield LB didn't get depth.
Looks like Bryce Grebe will have some tape to improve on.
He and Neil Daily almost played 2.5 quarters with Ryan Krahe playing a lot in the 2nd half.
Also, have no problem not bringing the heat on 4th and 19. LBs literally just have to get to depth and keep everything in front of them. Good teach tape on that play.

On one hand, yeah, it stinks that our backups gave up a 4th and 19 at a point when the game was obviously in hand. On the other hand, it’s a great moment to coach them up in moments when it doesn’t have an impact on the game. They’re all to make mistakes, I’d rather they learn against Mercyhurst than Idaho.
Team played well as a whole. Chance Wilson is going to be good.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but the starting D has only given up 24 points (17 to UNM in first half and 7 to Maine) in 4 games. Even though the schedule gets more difficult from Idaho on, that’s pretty dang impressive so far. We also held UNM to fewer offensive points than both Auburn and Arizona did (and UNM is playing Fresno State now so that is tbd). The offense is also averaging about 40pts/gm, and the first stringers have played approx 11/16 quarters.

No problem with no pressure, but if doing that initial alignment should be deeper to not get beat deep and close out. That was too easy a throw.

I was going to respond to @VimSince03 but since you brought up the point I'll ask you both:
Do you think we specifically didn't bring the house on that play, even though it would have worked, because we need to work on our zone coverage so whether the players executed well/correctly or not the point was to give them the opportunity and more game film to coach them up on? This was the most obvious play to me but I think we did this multiple times where we ran something we need to work on rather than what the most successful play would be.

Chance definitely seems to have more of "it" than Reed. Hopefully we can continue to get him (really both of them) live reps throughout the season. I still wish we'd throw it more with both of these guys but at least they're getting snaps.

I wonder if performance of backups defensively last game led to a more conservative offensive plan. Run an keep click rolling.
Didn’t get a chance to watch the game. So, how did the “back ups” look compared to last time? Did they seem to be more aligned and not getting beat at the point of attack?

Maybe, but we won by 39 and the defense only gave up one touchdown. We had plenty of room for error to call some designed pass plays. Chance could have thrown 3 interceptions and the win still wouldn't have been at risk.
