We still hold our edge in football championships at 3-2 over the frizz. And of course no one will ever touch us as the only school in the country with national championships in the three most important sports: Football, basketball, and rodeo. We won football in '56, '76 and '84. Hoops in '29. And rodeo in '72, '75 and '88.
I’m sorry, but I just cannot accept a 0-0 tie in the NAIA championship as a legit Championship. If we’re being generous and include your D2 Natty, then our teams are tied 2-2 for Football. Although, The ‘84 D1 Natty was well deserved and should be counted no matter the circumstances.
Thanks for being generous and including a title that was won through the playoff system of its time. That’s very kind of you.
So the Big Sky started in 63’ with the Cats and Griz both as members in the same level, right?
The Cats won that D2 title in 76.
The griz were at that same level in 76, right?

So how does the 76’ title count as any less than either of their 2?

If we’re looking at apples to apples comparisons, the titles are 2-2 while both teams are playing at the same level. There is no argument here, these two “count” under any possible way of looking at it.
FCS started in 1978 so D2 was the level. Realignment and title just changed in 78. Its virtually the same thing and absolutely counts as a National Title...especially since both were part of the same level in 1976.
Very few Griz fans have a hard time touting their big lead in the overall series, which is almost entirely from games played between 1910 and 1954. I think they won something like 40 out of 50 games during that stretch. But when you bring up that NAIA title (there have been a lot of 'ties' for national titles over the years) they have a tough time with it. MSU (NAIA) beat UM (NCAA) in 1956. It's a can't have your cake and eat it too situation. If they don't want to count that title, then I guess no one should count any games played before 1956. Can't have it both ways.
I’m a bit of a numbers nerd and like looking at this stuff. It’s interesting to break it down since there is such a long history to look at.

From the beginning through 1962 (last year before Big Sky was formed)- the griz led 42-15.

As we all know the vast majority of that time frame was made up from when the two teams played at different levels of college football.
Of their current 32 game lead in the series, 27 of them came in this time. Between 62 and 127 years ago.

During this time, there was a stretch from 1912-1962 that they owned a 35-8 advantage. (The first 9 games of the matchup were even, 7-7-2).

Since 1963, the only time frame that remotely makes sense to try and compare successes and head to head records since they were truly on the same playing level, in the same conference, etc, the record is 32-27 in favor of the griz. This includes the streak.

So in what is now a 60 year sample size of the two teams playing on the same level, the griz hold a small advantage in the head to head and are even in national titles. 2-2, the griz titles are just more recent.

There have been ebbs and flows in those 60 years. The Cats owned most of the 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s. The griz owned the late 80’s and 90’s. It’s been even since the early 2000’s.

Despite what most griz fans will say, it’s just simply not the dominance they like to pound their chest about. It’s recency bias more than anything else. And that recency bias is coming from a time that a becoming less and less “recent” (referring to the 90’s and 00’s when they had the streak going and/or played for national titles). As Tomcat says, if that 56’ national title doesn’t “count” for us, then stop counting the results of this game from that same time period 60+ years ago when they were playing in different levels, most of that time with leather helmets.

My thoughts exactly. Not a good look.

I hate the griz as much as anybody, but they just went 13-2, kicked our asses this year and played for a national title. Not the year to talk s**t…
Egris is cheap entertainment😂

No s**t talking. Just inconvenient facts to fuel their meltdowns.
Egriz and BCN are both cesspools. Ask any neutral observer.
It doesn’t really matter if you accept it or not, the players held up the trophy. Comparing BN to a fan forum that has a goofball like PeytonLives running it was a good chuckle, so thanks.

Also, do you accept all the Gris wins over MSU when the Bobcats were NAIA and the UM was NCAA? Seems like those games should be removed if you’re being consistent.

I noticed on one of the kick-offs that the gris attempted to team up and attempt to ‘throw’ at least one if not two SDSU players into the path of the ball as it was rolling in attempt to get a turn over. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that. Is that a new technique that’s allowable?
Depending on how they did it, it could be holding or a block in the back. If they shoved the player in the chest, it’s a legal play and I never understand why players from the receiving team are anywhere near the ball in those situations where the punt is rolling on the ground untouched.

I guarantee you that if it had been the griz who won a D-II NC in 1976, every griz fan on the planet would "count it" as being 100% legit, without considering it as "being generous" to do so. That was before I-AA/FCS even existed so it was still the 2nd highest level of college football at that time. If you want to dispute the 1956 NAIA title, so be it, but there should be no debate about the 1976 NC.
Gris fans sure do like to point out all of their wins against MSU when the Bobcats were NAIA and UM was NCAA. What’s actually impressive is that some of those MSU NAIA teams beat UM during that era.

How many teams that were DII in 1976 are FBS now, including several from our own conference? I would argue the competition in DII back then was much tougher than FCS now.
Also including Akron, the team that we beat for the D-II National Championship in 1976. You make a very good point, and you are absolutely correct in saying that the 1976 version of D-II was more competitive than the current version of FCS.

We were named the champs after the tie per the process in place at the time. It's not a shared title. We won.
Really? And after all these years, I honestly did not know that, I thought both teams were crowned as champs. This makes it even more legitimate in my mind then. Do you know what they used as the tiebreaker?

Scoring 0 points is in no way a legitimate win. I will admit I was wrong about the D2 win. That one should be counted. Wasn’t aware of the teams present in the division, wasn’t born until long after that.

Ahhh. I see the mistake. You woke up thinking we care what you think. You're wrong. We care that the governing body that over saw the NAIA said the trophy was earned and given. That the other schools participating agreed and that the school accepted it. Maybe you can lodge a complaint with the NAIA and take it up with them. I imagine it won't go well for you as you have so little information on the subject. Heck you didn't even know FCS came from what D2 was 24 hours ago.

I did some more research on the 1956 Aluminum Bowl that ended 0-0 and I was wrong that we were declared the champs. Us and St Joseph's College (Indiana) were declared co-champs. My bad. So our lead in national football 'ships is 2-1/2 to 2. A lead nonetheless.

There have been numerous co-champions over the years in the pre-playoff era. Not sure how many have had a tie game in the championship. Nonetheless you get credit for a championship even if it’s a tie.

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Yes, seems weird how they wouldn't have done some type of tie breaker, kicking game or whatever.

Since 1956 there has been 15 co-champions in D1A/FBS. 3 of those years, there was 3 co-champions. The most recent co-champions were LSU and USC in 2003. Yes, they both have National Champions 2003 on their websites.

Since there was no tie-breaker for the 1956 NAIA championship, it is the same as teams with similar records being voted as the national champions. 1956 MSU Bobcats were undoubtedly named co-champions.

Yes, seems weird how they wouldn't have done some type of tie breaker, kicking game or whatever.
The story I vaguely recall is that the game was played during a huge rain and the field was ankle deep in mud. MSU was able to move the ball and got into FG range a few times but the conditions were so bad that making it was nearly impossible. I think St. Francis only like 3-4 first downs and several players were injured.

MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Curious if you might have this, but what is the series record since the streak ended?
