Here is the link for Laser, backing me up that his name is Jim Starr.

I guess his real name is Jim Kalafat, but he changed it to Jim Starr. He was Laser on American Gladiators. This is funny, I had no idea. When I was a kid I loved that show. I would have cheered for Laser had I known he was a Bobcat!!

As far as an IMPACT player (teams had to prepare for these guys in their scheme) on defense I would have to pick the following 3 in this order:

1) Mark Fellows
2) Corey Widmer
3) Joey Thomas (Agree with more emotional restraint/smarts he would be on top of list I think). I do like his go for broke attitude though, you need that as a corner.

To answer a couple of the previous posts: The D-Lineman that played for the NY Giants was Corey Widmer from Bozeman. The "Gladiator" was Jim Kalafat from GF.

Still Looking forward to Saturday! GO CATS!

Sonny Holland has almost become a cliche', but trust me, he was the best ever. He could have played offensive line (and did) linebacker (and did) or even runningback. He also was a pretty good coach. After Sonny..
QB-Kelly Bradley
RB-Don Hass
DL-Bill Kollar
OL-John Borchardt
DB-Sean Hill, Bob Banaugh (tie)
K-Pat Bolton (out performed Stenerud at MSU)
Greatest most forgotten-Bob Schmidt and Jim Kalafat

Jim Kalafat AKA Jim Starr AKA Laser still holds the MSU single season tackling record with 202. He and Mike Godfrey co-captained a potentially good team in 1983. The team went 1-10. If Jim would have played the following season, he would be a legend! Timing can be everything!

I haven't seen Tony Boddie mentioned. He had a few good years in the USFL and was a pretty solid back for MSU.

I've always felt that the bobcats have always had atheletes on your team that are very talented. If you look at NFL records, although I'm not certain, I think the Cats have placed more players in the NFL than the g riz. It seems that in past years (last 2 not counting) it never really came together. Sometimes it takes more than a few talented players to pull together a team.
This is not meant as smack, but just an observation.

The 3 that stick out the most for me are Mark Fellows, Kelly Bradley and Steve Kracher....there are several more but those are the guys I remember making big impacts for the Cats over the years.

What about WR Chip Hobbs? I, for one, think his numbers would have been amazing if not for all the nagging injuries he had.

Or DB Morgan Ryan. Didn't he have something like 14 interceptions in 2 years?

during my years at MSU Morgan Ryan and Sean Hill were tough players. the list for best ever is a very tough one.

Bay Area Cat wrote:Do you really mean intelligence, or rather, temperment? In reading about and listening to Joey, he seems like a pretty bright guy. I think he made some "stupid" plays on the field relating to personal fouls, but that really isn't intelligence related so much as it is temperment.

I don't have either of their (thomas/Ioine) grades of SAT's sitting in front of me, so what do I know....

Of course, if you would have compared him to one of our many recent Academic All-Americans, then I would completely understand the distinction based on pure intelligence.
Mr. Bay Area Cat, I don't think bobcatftl was talking about academic intelligence...he's talking about football not the Academic Olympics.

I believe the same, Joey is an athelete with many talents, but his awareness of the game and the "football field intelligence" just aren't there, this includes his attitude and temperment. He's going to meet the challenge at the next level when he can't rely on his athleticism to pick up the slack. His head better be screwed on straight when he gets to camp because his "I'm all that" attitude isn't going to cut it when bangin' with the big boys. I personally wouldn't put him in the top 5.

My vote Mark Fellows

All of the scouting reports that have come out on Thomas say this same thing, that he has all the physical tools, just needs to work on his instincts and awareness, yet they are still projecting him in the 2nd round. As cocky as he comes off on the field, from the things that he has said and have been said about him by scouts and analysts, you get the feeling he is leaving that attitude on the field and is more than willing to take advice and instruction on what it will take for him to be successful at the next level. I for one am looking forward to seeing him on Sundays.
