If we're going to play some FCS no-name school, at least get someone like SFA or SHSU who will bring fans. Although if I remember correctly SHSU was pretty good last year, they might beat us
OUCH! I bet we will get more Cat fans into Ford Field than either of those schools could or would. JMO.

A big upside to playing SMU rather then the NDSU Bison is that there will be no shortage of available tickets.

Just a heads up for anyone planning on making it to the game, tickets for Delta jumped $30 from yesterday so I'm sure the other airlines won't be far behind

(For a Thursday Sept 5 - Sunday Sept 8 trip)

I'm glad to see my wisdom over on PonyFans.com has made its way all the way over to the MSU boards. While I stand by my original statement that SFA or SHSU would bring more fans to Ford Stadium than MSU, I hope a lot of you can make the trip. Dallas is a fun city, and if you've never seen it before, you can check out where JFK got shot, tour the new Cowboys Stadium, or check out the soon-to-be completed George W Bush Presidential Library on SMU's campus if, uh, that's your cup of tea. Based on recent election results, odds are that it is.

Ford Stadium is nice enough, and you'll have your pick of good seats for a reasonable price. The main attraction on SMU gamedays is the Boulevard- a long, tree-lined area of SMU's campus where everyone tailgates and stares at hot college girls for 3+ hours before kickoff. People are, for the most part, pretty accommodating and willing to share a beer or a burger with a visiting fan. I'd highly recommend ya'll check it out- too many of our own fans even choose to stay on the Boulevard and tailgate while the actual game is going on.

As for our team, we'll lose several guys to the NFL this year- most notably Margus Hunt and Zach Line, SMU's second all-time leading rusher behind only Eric Dickerson. Garrett Gilbert, who you may remember as the guy who spelled Colt McCoy in the 2010 BCS National Championship game against Alabama, transferred to SMU and is now our starting QB. He didn't exactly light the world on fire last year, but we're hoping for better things this year. Basically, we don't really know what to expect from this team this year, we lost a lot on defense and pretty much everyone is ready for June Jones to ride off into the sunset and stop collecting $2million/year paychecks will turning in half-assed efforts in both coaching and recruiting. So, yeah, that's about it.

I don't know, great people though most of their fans are I'm not sure that SHSU (or SFA presumably) has the same type of relatively large (for FCS), football-loving fanbase that FCS teams up here in Montana or North Dakota seem to have. For example, when SHSU played NDSU in Frisco, TX (past two FCS championships), the NDSU fans vastly outdrew SHSU, despite Huntsville being right down the block in comparison. I don't recall the exact percentage but I think it was something like 70-80% NDSU.
I'm guessing that has to do with the fact that we have no "big names" up here to draw fan interest away, like a Texas or A&M, or even Baylor, Houston, SMU etc.

But hell, what do I know. Watch a couple hundred people show up now that I'm trying to give self-assurance . Hope the game turns out well, I'd probably go if I wasn't a broke college student.

Last year's SMU home attendance (from espn.com which is known to be often wrong, but I'm too lazy this am to confirm):
  • SF Austin @ SMU 20,122
    Texas A & M @ SMU 32,016
    TCU @ SMU 28,436
    Houston @ SMU 16,459
    Memphis @ SMU 20,330
    Southern Miss @ SMU 16,343
    Tulsa @ SMU 15,336
I am somewhat certain that MSU will draw as good as SF Austin, I'm fairly positive that we'll draw better than the C-USA teams as those numbers are weak. But TCU @ SMU is baffling (4000+ empty seats). How the heck was that game not packed?

The TCU game was basically played in a monsoon this year, which should explain the 28k figure. When they came to Ford in 2010 it drew about 35,000, which I believe is our largest crowd ever. I'd be surprised if the MSU game draws anywhere close to 20,000, I bet it will be closer to 15k. If we beat Texas Tech week one that might convince a few more people to come out and watch, but don't hold your breath on that happening.

I will be there! Will tailgate and will bring about 10 "BOBCATS for the day" fans. Looking forward to it!
Dallas (and the SMU area) are great places to spend a weekend. Tons to do, plenty to see!

P.S. The Rangers are in California that weekend but play the Pirates from Monday through Wednesday - I can help any Bobcat fans score tickets if you want to stay an extra day. Great ballpark and overall atmosphere.

MSU last year averaged about 3,500 less per game than SMU did, including those two low attendance, freeze your butt off playoff games. Not shabby for an FCS team.

And we're already working on a September trip to be at the game. Hopefully will be bringing 7-8 people.

So it's probably not to soon to ask ... how bad is the visitor's section in SMU's stadium? Is it like A&M, which was horrible, or can a guy actually see the game well from the seats we will be assigned?

I assume they can't be too bad, since it's not that big of a stadium, and if I make it to the game I'd much rather be in a section with all of the other MSU fans.

There really is no bad seat at the stadium. It is pretty nice. I sat in the visitor’s section (southeast side of stadium) for the A&M/SMU game and had no problem seeing the game. The thing is hardly anyone goes to SMU games so you can pretty much sit anywhere you want.

As for lodging, I would definitely try to stay near downtown or uptown.

I can't believe the way some of the SMU fans are laying into June Jones for dumping Baylor and adding MSU!!??!! Following the resurrection of the football program in 1989 SMU had ONE winning season until June Jones arrived. That's one in 22 years. In his first season, 2008, he went 1-11 and then 8-5, 7-7, 8-5, 7-6 ( and the Hawaii Bowl). Jones is 3-1-1 in winning seasons. They were 1-18-3 in the years following the death sentence and before he came. Maybe they should be building a statue of him, not telling him to "grow a pair".

SMU will be a really good test for MSU early in the season. I kind of have one of those feelings about this game that we can in fact not only compete with SMU, but can win this. Either way, the boys will enjoy the early season test in Texas, and I think if they want it, they can still have their cake and eat it too by playing NDSU in the playoffs.

DeNarius is going to want to go out on top. Depending on how the Spring installation process goes for the new offense, we might be in a good spot playing into D Mac's improvisations and with the expanded athletes on the roster this year, we will have a fully loaded weaponry on offense. I think the defense will also shine with our linebacker corps being as strong as they are. The DLine and OLine play will determine our early season success in my opinion. As they develop and gel, so too will the team.

Is anyone excited or looking forward to this game? If we are going to play up we should play a team with a name. I know SMU has a past but it is a checkered one and in my lifetime they have not been good. I get it, this is a money game but we can do better. The only good point about this game is I really think we are going to beat them and I didn't feel this confident about NDSU.
I also find it funny that their fans think that this is going to be our Super Bowl! I know they lost a more interesting game for them but playing SMU is no dream for us either!
