Inside scoop - with a grain of salt - from my frizz son-in-law is BH wanted a three year contract but was only offered one. That rubbed him the wrong way so he waited until all his asst's signed theirs then decided to retire. Kennedy is a one year guy, then they want Matt Miller.
Not impossible but Miller is making around $500,000 at Wazzu as OC.
I looked it up and Vigen was making a base salary of $300,000 as Wyoming's OC when he took the MSU job. Not sure how $300K in 2021 "coaching dollars" compares to $500K in 2026 but it seems fairly comparable. To me it's more about how much Miller wants to be a head coach or if he's content to stay as an OC for now. If he wants to be a head coach, in all aspects except money the UM job seems much more desirable than taking on an FBS rebuilding project like Choate has (so far) unsuccessfully tried to pull off at Nevada.
Wyoming OC was $400K last year.

It just doesn’t seem like many Wazzu OCs have become FCS HCs.

Not impossible but I think the experience of being a OC at Wazzu might be better than HC at an FCS school.

Assuming Miller is successful at Wazzu, you’d think he’d be a hot commodity at a MWC school.
I think the massive recent success story for Wazzu OCs is Eric Morris, who went there from Incarnate Word and then from WSU got the head coaching jobs at North Texas and now Oklahoma State. As for Pac-12 coordinators taking FCS head coaching jobs, the recent example I immediately thought of is Beau Baldwin going from Cal's OC to Cal Poly HC. Is being a Pac-12 coordinator "better" than being a FCS head coach at one of the Top 5-10 programs at that level? That would probably depend who you ask. I'm pretty sure I know what Coach Vigen's answer would be.

Give me your percent chance UM hires Bobby to be their head coach in the future.

0%. He's 61, been there done that. I think he's going to fish, play with grandkids, and maybe look for an analyst type job if he gets bored.

Now Robbie? That's more of a 50-50 in my mind.

Strange to say the least. I watched it from the viewpoint that if this guy was replacing Vigen at this point under the same roster, I would be worried:
+ No changes - same defense
+ He will continue to coach WRs while HC - not a good move
+ Vision will come, but nothing other than cliches' and a resume of WR position coaching since I graduated MSU (I'm now 59) including 2017 and 2023 was he was jobless
+Cringy - joking about staying in Hauck's basement - what was that about?

Gut tells me 4 losses in Big Sky (UCD, NAU, EWU, NCMSU) with Idaho a toss-up. There are some decent QBs coming back in the Big Sky.

The most annoying part in this is that the media guys, for the most part, will focus on his "winningest coach in the Big Sky", etc, etc, and won't mention his losing record to his rival. Of course that's what happens when you retire versus being fired or not renewed - you get to go out in a blaze of glory.
The media has been really annoying with their griz centric reporting. All of them.

Is there any speculating that with Hauck being in Hawaii instead of recruiting he was basically given the ultimatum quit or get fired? This is just the story that was concocted.
Yeah, I don't believe the "quit or be fired" thing at all either. From what I've read on here, Haslam seems surprised that Hauck quit and didn't get the notice until the night before. In my opinion, the timing was perfect. Some on here have already noted, this keeps most of the roster intact, limiting the opportunity for players to go into the portal and lets the gris sign their incoming class. Sure, the portal opens up for those players now that Hauck quit, but the possible roster spots on teams those players could go to is severely diminished had he quit after Cat-gris.
The interesting one here is Gillman. This is his 4th year at UM so its likely he's in the final few months to get his bachelor degree. The school part is less of an issue for him. I'm sure he heard from FBS teams. Does the coaching change give him pause about coming back for the final year or does he go try playing at a big time school. But yeah I don't think they lose much if any at all.
Yeah, I don't think Gillman would have much trouble finding a roster spot at a mid tier P4 or top tier G5 school.

Could probably get some money and a good start on a grad degree.

He is already getting a lot of NIL money from um. I don't know what the average FBS RB gets, but Gillman is getting paid pretty well.

Troy Taylor went from Utah OC to Sac State HC to Stanford HC.

And I think you could use Jeff Choate as a cautionary tale...He easily could have been a short lister for a good job like Boise State if he had stayed at MSU...instead he jumped to a co-DC then to a TERRIBLE G5 job and hes going to be on the hot seat even at that crummy job sooner rather than later.

Personally, I think theres a lot to be said for making decent money at a good team, winning conference championships and playoff games...even if you cold make a little more money elsewhere.

The other interesting contemporary comparison would be Curt Cignetti...JMU head coach at the FCS level, then a jump to a "dead end" job at Indiana and look what happened...

How much is 'a lot'? I tend to think he can probably get more at a lot of other places. Not many BSC players are getting what I would consider 'a lot'...

Choate is a cautionary tale that made nearly the same mistake that Hauck did by jumping to a then terrible program at UNLV. Choate had one stop in-between that didn't get him any better gig than he could have gotten sticking around MSU for a few more years and improving the Cats even more. Choate was on the short list for the Boise State job though when he was at MSU, interviewed for the Boise HC position, and then when he didn't get it, he jumped to Texas like 9 days later.

Given that four of their last six head coaches have been named either Bob or Bobby, I'll extrapolate that out to the next hire and say it's a 66.67% chance!
