Combine invites
To my knowledge, Troy is the only Bobcat player in recent history to get invited to the combine. What is the criteria to get that invite? Was there any player on the 2025 team who would have met the qualifications to be invited? Obviously not since they didn't, but why? I know there will be a Pro Day, and I'm sure several will perform there.

Re: Combine invites
I don't think there are any specific requirements to be invited to the combine, other than be graded as a high-ish draft pick.nanacat wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 10:14 amTo my knowledge, Troy is the only Bobcat player in recent history to get invited to the combine. We won't see any seniors from this past year be invited to the combine.

Not sure how its run today but for years its Cowboys legend Gil Brandt that determined the invitees.wbtfg wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 10:22 amI don't think there are any specific requirements to be invited to the combine, other than be graded as a high-ish draft pick.nanacat wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 10:14 amTo my knowledge, Troy is the only Bobcat player in recent history to get invited to the combine. Truth is it should change. They invite guys that are sure picks, day 1 and 2 guys and it should be the fringe players. Day 1-2 picks have plenty of film and their pro days. Quite a few opt out of drills and just go to get measured, do health and interview stuff. They can only hurt their stock so they don't do the drills until their pro day anyway. It should be guys like Juice and Brott that go. They are the guys that could raise their stock.

Re: Combine invites
It appeared to me that Brott has no desire to play in the NFL. He seemed anxious to start losing the extra weight he has been carrying around for the past few years, and getting his foot fixed.

Re: Combine invites
I don't think his point was Brott specifically, but rather inviting players who aren't automatic drafts in the first 2 round, guys who need to up their stock, and that makes sense to me. I think it was last year that several guys didn't perform in the combine, as was mentioned above, just doing the basic stuff. What's the point of having the combine if the shoe-ins don't even participate? Give the guys like Davis a shot.

Re: Combine invites
The big money is spent on high draft picks so it makes sense that the NFL would want as many as possible in one setting under controlled circumstances.Prodigal Cat wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 10:44 amNot sure how its run today but for years its Cowboys legend Gil Brandt that determined the invitees.wbtfg wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 10:22 amI don't think there are any specific requirements to be invited to the combine, other than be graded as a high-ish draft pick.nanacat wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 10:14 amTo my knowledge, Troy is the only Bobcat player in recent history to get invited to the combine. Tommy Mellott ran a 4.39 on a pro day where his hip was so bad that it needed surgery and he got cut by the team that drafted him. A full medical and interview and he doesn’t get drafted. Because he was a low draft pick, it didn’t really cost the Raiders anything other than a signing bonus.
I feel Tommy’s agent did him a bit of a disservice by hiding that injury.

Re: Combine invites
Troy was the most recent obviously in 2022. Technically Beau Sandland was another one in 2016, he tested as the 4th most athletic TE in his class, and was drafted in the 7th round. Before that, it was Mike Person in 2011, and he was tested as the 17th most athletic OL in his class, was later drafted in the 7th round and had a nice and modest little career...nanacat wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 10:14 amTo my knowledge, Troy is the only Bobcat player in recent history to get invited to the combine. Generally, you have to have good to great production, but even better physical traits to get invited. Scouts look for size, arm length, speed, hand size, agility, all those things matter the most. They call them the "Underwear Olympics" for a reason. They want to see the most elite athletes live and in person to see if their actual measurables match what they see on film. It's rare that many FCS guys get invited (typically 5-6 a year), but when they do, you know they have elite physical traits and are highly thought of by the NFL scouts.
