I feel bad for Alex though. Should have won that game.
Yes, Denver electing to throw the ball, much less run it for a yard instead of kicking a field goal was a head scratcher. Was hoping for a Cat v Cat Superbowl. Go get that ring Ty !
I'm firmly convinced that coaches are generally too aggressive in today's game, in terms of going for it on 4th down. Rams should have kicked the FG late in the game today. Then if they get a stop, as they did, all they need is another FG, instead of a TD to win it. If we hadn't gone for it late in the first half against NDSU last year, then this would have been our 2nd straight Natty.
And yet, ISU decided to kick the FG on 4th and 1 and look how that worked out for them.

It would be great to see Ty get a ring. One of the all time great underdog success stories at MSU.

Just because it was blocked doesn't mean it wasn't the right call at the time. In that specific situation situation, that's the correct call 100 times out of 100.

I agree. You don’t get points for converting on fourth down. You aren’t guaranteed of scoring a TD or a FG if you make it on fourth down. And you aren’t guaranteed of not turning it over if you convert.

And in ISU’s case none of the players were pleading with the coach to let them go for it. And Dawson wasn’t running well from middle of the third on, and he was stuffed twice on second and third and goal earlier.

Whoa. Respectfully disagree. Matter of fact, I would say it's way more weighted on the side of 100 for 100 going for it with that offense at that time:
+ In the 2nd half, they were 3-3 TD drives, averaging 5.6 YPP. On the current drive averaging 7.5 YPP. We couldn't stop s***.
+ It was 4th and 1 with 57 seconds left on our 21. We had punted 3 of the 4 possessions in the 2nd half. In the 4th quarter we had 9 plays for minus 23 yards.
+ It was a 38-yard FG between the starter who was 10-17 for the year and benched in the playoffs for a dude who was in his second game with the team. Somewhat cold, a ton of pressure.
+ It is for the National Championship. Step up with the Big Boy Pants. I was happy when I saw the Italian cook run out onto the field for the FG attempt. Put the ball in Rittenhouse's hands and tell him to win the Natty. He was doing that the entire 2nd half.

The only difference them going for it would have changed was they would have just run down the time and tried a slightly shorter fg. They already showed they weren't going to be super aggressive after they got the big pass to Lord. No reason to think we wouldn't have still blocked it and went to overtime.

Honestly, without knowing all those numbers, I was sure they were going to go for it, because the Cats really weren't stopping them well. I don't disagree though that taking the points is generally a good idea, and we've seen that 3 point spread often enough determining who wins. Ultimately it's a judgement call either way.

Did Ty play yesterday? I never heard or laid eyes on him. Admittedly wasn’t seeing clearly after that taunting penalty. He sure earned it.

He didn't have any tackles and wasn't on the field much with the D. I think with Stafford, they were playing more corners. I'm no expert though.

ISU was moving the ball but not especially well. Dawson had been held in check and didn’t get anything on two similar plays that were run back to back. He had just 42 yards on 15 carries going into that play.

Rittenhouse is not a big boy. If he were he would’ve Bernie Kosar’d his coach. Instead he just went and sat on the bench and then acted pissed when the kick was blocked. Poor leader in that moment. If he wanted to go for he should’ve made a strong pitch to his coach, not wait for the kick to get blocked and then act like he wanted to go.

The kick was blocked easily, so there’s no guarantee that they make it from closer. It wasn’t low and the timing was not thrown off by the low snap. The kicker had made 10 straight kicks (7 xps, 3 FGs) going into it. It was just a great play by McMillan and he blocked it with his shoulder.

Just because you covert on fourth down, it doesn’t mean you’re going to score. It wasn’t low either the Oklahoma vs Florida State or Tennessee vs Florida State title game that fsu converted on fourth down and then turned it over a couple plays later instead of taking the field goal attempt. The fourth down conversion did nothing for them.

Nope. He just went and sat on the bench and then got mad when they got blocked. He was an absolute bitch in that moment.

He also tripped over his own two feet on the previous play.

The coaches made the mistake of listening to him earlier in the game when he yelled to put Dawson back in and then Dawson was stuffed on consecutive plays. So he would’ve had a hard time getting his way after that move.

Ty pulled an oblique muscle in the Titan's game a couple of weeks ago. So the guy who's place he took was playing. Seems like the old Wally Pipp thing. Ty is listed as the second team at both safety positions. He was the personal protector on punts. Not sure how many other special teams he was on but I assume all of them.
