Portal information
A retired AD from an SEC school did some research and posted this today.
I thought I would share it here. I haven't confirmed the accuracy of the data but it is interesting to look at:
Final Portal Totals…
Revealing, perhaps shocking.
10,965 NCAA football players entered the portal
—3,972 FBS
—2,771 FCS
—4,222 D2/D3
Many have signed and are enrolled at new schools.
But 6,671 NCAA football players are active and still hoping to sign.
—1,619 FBS
—1,782 FCS
—3,270 D2/3
Put another way, 41%of FBS players who entered the portal are still looking for a home.
64% of FCS and 77% of D2/3 players are looking for a home.
60%of all players entering the portal have not found a place to go.
These are NCAA statistics.
It is up to their former school whether or not to take the portal players back.
The grass is not always greener.

The grass is not only not always greener, sometimes it's just dirt.

And a kick away from a championship.

Re: Portal information
I'd guess that a significant portion of the players who end up unsigned are ones that were "let go" by their current teams or were encouraged to enter the portal due to a low expectation of future contributions or playing time. It's a two way street and a player wanting to stay with his team doesn't matter if the coaching staff finds someone they think is better for that roster spot.aucat wrote: ↑Sat Jan 17, 2026 11:12 pmA retired AD from an SEC school did some research and posted this today.

They still have the entire spring semester to sign. So just because someone doesn't have a home yet, doesn’t mean they won't find one over the next 4 months.

Re: Portal information
130 FBS teams x 105 players per team = 13,500 FBS players.
And 3k+ are still looking for a spot?
I hope that this year finally puts the kibosh on what I would call 'overuse' of the portal. Reshuffling the same 51 cards in the Solitare deck & hoping something good is going to happen.
I wonder who is giving all these guys the advice to jump into the portal?

Re: Portal information
That makes a certain amount of sense, and no doubt those cases are real. But (just to take FBS) 1,600 portalers is something like 15% of the entire population. Are 15% of FBS players really getting cut?MSU01 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 17, 2026 11:36 pmI'd guess that a significant portion of the players who end up unsigned are ones that were "let go" by their current teams or were encouraged to enter the portal due to a low expectation of future contributions or playing time. Somebody is giving a lot of these guys bad advice. I've got no real problem with a guys transferring from MSU to legit FBS playoff teams like Utah or Indiana. No problem with leveraging a great season at MSU to get a full ride to UCLA. No problem with a guy who gets offered a legit big payday.
But it seems like a huge percentage of these guys are going the Scottre Humphrey route at best and are just shuffling from one mediocre situation to another. (Or even from a pretty good to pretty mediocre, like SH).
Obviously, there are guys like Lamson who it seems to be working out well for, but I have to think that most of these guys would be a lot better off staying put.

Re: Portal information
From what I've heard through the different commentary, it seems as if agents are a huge issue in the portal. Not that having representation is a bad thing, but there is no vetting process for the agents, and they don't have to be registered. Easy to get bad advice when people aren't trained to do the job that's in front of them.

Re: Portal information
Texas tech are paying their players 50 million next year. One tackle is getting 5.1 million.. their collective only raised 8 million of that.

Re: Portal information
Reports say that the $50m is across all sports. $20m is the revenue sharing.
It helps if you have an oil billionaire funding things. I don't think MSU has any billionaire benefactors.

Not on the sports side, anyway. We have a pretty nice engineering building from a billionaire.

Re: Portal information
Yup, and there is at least one other MSU grad billionaire worth more than Asbjornson, but she must not like sports. Jabs isn’t a billionaire, but he has done well for himself.

To be clear, he may or may not be a billionaire. Depends on the daily fluctuation in the value of his stock.4KornerKat wrote: ↑Sun Jan 18, 2026 7:11 pmHe's given a fair amount to athletics projects as well.SonomaCat wrote: ↑Sun Jan 18, 2026 6:49 pmNot on the sports side, anyway. Lets just say hes worth a cool bill...funding a Texas Tech level program is worth 2-3% of his net worth every year.
Thats a fair sight different than a guy worth 3 or 4 bill when that number is <1% annually.
Not trying to dismiss the very real value these guys bring, but a billion just doesn't buy the football team that it did back in Denny Washingtons' day if you know what I mean.
