Heard it at a wedding in 1992 in park city mt blended with everybody get laid get f$&&$twyliesports wrote: ↑Wed Dec 31, 2025 11:18 amHello! Tom Wylie here with MTN Sports. Trying to crowd source an answer to something I've been wondering about. Does anyone know the origins/history of "Mony Mony" playing at MSU football games?
I've asked some experts and no one can really pin point how it started, but mentioned they've heard it at weddings and events going back at least 15 years. I reached out to Billy Idol's PR folks to see if he's aware it's a staple in Bozeman, but unsurprisingly they declined comment!
Wondering if some of the longtime fans here have memories of the first time they heard "Mony Mony" at an MSU athletic event? Thanks for any feedback!

Re: "Mony Mony" Origins?
We were singing that version when I was in the service back in the 80s.
I just have to add, that while the youngin' in me enjoys the hell out of it (ESG:GCG), I had to think long and hard about it after the Super Brawl. The entire stadium screaming ESG GCG and "F**k the Grizzlies" really turned me off when I realized how many kids were there listening to that and taking part in it. Then I saw a 10 year old kid being interviewed on TV while wearing a "ESG" ball cap. It just ain't right.
Yeah, I know, I'm old, but back when I was a kid we really weren't exposed to that amount of vulgar language...and certainly not in public like that. TImes sure have changed, and not for the better IMO.
I'll step off my soapbox now...

Well if it gives you any solace the 10 year old’s hat actually had FTG on it….rather than ESG. 🫣Augustus wrote: ↑Fri Jan 02, 2026 8:33 pmWe were singing that version when I was in the service back in the 80s.

Have you seen dixieland delight? The Tennessee football version.. those kids are taught to walk and sing Dixieland delight simultaneously.Augustus wrote: ↑Fri Jan 02, 2026 8:33 pmWe were singing that version when I was in the service back in the 80s.

I remember it in the student section in 98. And I was in a fraternity but I doubt mine started it. And it was some people in the student section but by no means the entire student section. Within a couple years it had taken over the student section.
For those Eric Funk fans, you know he had/has a show on PBS?

Heck, my memory of the 70s and 80s is a bit different. I remember booze soaked endzone stands with all sorts of craziness going on. Heck, the streaker in 1982 is still a vivid memory. I send the stadium video of everyone chanting “ESG” to my friends in other states and none of them could even make out what was being said until I told them. Yeah, in the stadium it’s a bit more noticeable, but a parent can tell their kids to chant something different. I do believe ESG should only be done when playing the gris though.Augustus wrote: ↑Fri Jan 02, 2026 8:33 pmWe were singing that version when I was in the service back in the 80s.

Funny, on the plane ride to Nashville they played Mony Mony twice and about half the riders sung the chant.

So don't ask me Hank why do you drink?
Why do you roll smoke?
Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?
There are lots of songs that have things said you wouldnt normally say around kids except for when a song comes on. Noone complaining about HW Jr songs playing I'm sure.

Seriously? There is a world of difference between singing a Hank Jr. song about smoking and drinking and having a young child going around yelling s**t and f**ck. I'd have had my mouth washed out soap and would have done the same to my kids.lutecat wrote: ↑Sun Jan 04, 2026 7:49 amSo don't ask me Hank why do you drink?

Beautiful. I’ve tipped every house band that has played it. Heck, the aircrew played Mony Mony twice on the flight down here.twyliesports wrote: ↑Sun Jan 04, 2026 9:33 amDid a story down here in Nashville, thanks folks for your input!

There was a singer last night who said “this song is going to pay my rent this month”. HahaAFCAT wrote: ↑Sun Jan 04, 2026 3:39 pmBeautiful. I’ve tipped every house band that has played it. Re: "Mony Mony" Origins?
The song goes back to 1968 but I suspect the cat version came about in 1982? I seem to remember it.
