SFA was the Southland conference champ this year. They went 10-2 in the regular season. Their only FCS loss was to ACU whom they just beat in the 2nd round last Saturday.

Re: #7 SFA @ #2 MSU Friday night.
They will run the ball a good amount. They average roughly 40 rush attempts a game. They have 4 guys that will get carries. Unlike Yale, they rely on speed over power. That is an advantage for our D. When we set the edge and force speedy guys inside, running is difficult for opposing teams. We do a really good job of stringing out outside runs as well. The better defenses they have faced this year have held them under 4 YPC, closer to 3. Vidlak will be the one that has to beat us.

Last week they ran for 32 for 145. 92 were on 2 runs. Other than those 2, 30 for 53. Seal the edge to avoid the big runs and I'm good with 1.76/rush. Vidlak doesn't appear to run at all. He had 5 for -18 which have to be sacks.

Common opponent in Cal Poly. SFU won 35 17 at home Cats won 34 17 on road. Common film should help.RockyBearCat wrote: ↑Mon Dec 08, 2025 12:07 pmLast week they ran for 32 for 145. 92 were on 2 runs. Re: #7 SFA @ #2 MSU Friday night.
It’s worth noting with the scores that in 8 of SFA’s 11 wins this year the starters were pulled in the 3rd quarter and the Jacks started running the clock a lot more. Most opponents scoring came in garbage time against the backup defense.91catAlum wrote: ↑Mon Dec 08, 2025 10:57 amSFA was the Southland conference champ this year. Re: #7 SFA @ #2 MSU Friday night.
Vidlak doesn’t run but we do have a backup QB is a great runner who gets brought in for a somewhat wildcat package. I usually dislike packages like that but he is actually pretty effective out of it.RockyBearCat wrote: ↑Mon Dec 08, 2025 12:07 pmLast week they ran for 32 for 145. 92 were on 2 runs. This is also true for many of Montana State's scores.

Carthel is a phenomenal coach and even better dude. The players love playing for him, which is why other than the first year of the portal SFA has done a great job at hanging onto players. A lot of these guys have been with SFA their entire career.

Definitely seems like a coach people like playing for!SFASawmill wrote: ↑Mon Dec 08, 2025 4:11 pmCarthel is a phenomenal coach and even better dude. Just curious. Who's your fastest player on offense, defense, and besides Vidlak, can you please name your top 3 most important players? Just want a good scouting report from a knowledgeable fan's perspective.
Even though it was frustrating that our Out-of-Conference game fell through, I have respect for SFA. You guys had a very similar season to us in your league. Lost to an FBS team in Houston, lost a close one to ACU in the second game, were 0-2 and turned it around to go undefeated and roll teams the rest of the way.
Vidlak/Lamson also had a similar journey where finding a change in scenery did their careers wonders. Both are probably top 10 QBs in the FCS after having wildly disappointing starts to their careers. It's pretty cool to see both of these team's journey to get to this point and should be a good game on Friday night!

Except for the fact he’s ducked us a couple time leaving us high and dry to find a new game. Looking forward to karma showing up in bobcat stadium friday night.

He was more pissed than anyone that the game got cancelled. It was the SLC that forced it to be cancelled, not SFA.
The SLC scheduled us a conference game the same week that we had previously scheduled to play y’all, and it couldn’t be rescheduled.
Unfortunately it made us have to schedule a horrible sub D1 opponent last minute. Everyone in the athletics department I know was extremely upset about it.

On offense Kylon Harris and Clayton Weyland are Vidlak’s go to receivers. Kylon is a speedster with great hands and is really good at beating people deep, and Clayton is just a high motor guy who’s really good at piling up the RAC yards. We have a deep RB room but Wimbley gets most of the carries and has a really good mix of explosive speed and power running. In short yardage situations we usually sub in backup QB Gavin Rutherford who is a very strong runner, but has a good enough arm to make it hard for defenses to know what’s coming.BlueAndGoldNation wrote: ↑Mon Dec 08, 2025 5:37 pmDefinitely seems like a coach people like playing for!SFASawmill wrote: ↑Mon Dec 08, 2025 4:11 pmCarthel is a phenomenal coach and even better dude. Defensively Jaydon Southard is a guy who finds his way into pretty much every play, leading the SLC in tackles for loss and leading the team in tackles. Ky Thomas is a high IQ defensive end who is great at recognizing and blowing up play action or read option plays. And Charles Demmings is a ball hawk who has an uncanny ability to lock pretty much anyone down. It’s why Charles got an invite to the senior bowl and east west game.
On special teams we use 2 kickers, Alvarado for short kicks and Hand for deep ones. Hand has made a 56 yarder like it was nothing this year, still had about 10 yards behind it. And return man Bugs Mortimer is probably the fastest player in the FCS. He’s returned I think 4 or 5 punts for touchdowns this year. He missed last game with an injury though and I’m not sure if he’ll be back by Friday, which hurts us.
