He was the starting center for the Cowboys for a few years.

You can say that again. All Big Ten, All American as a player, successful head coach, successful assistant.VimSince03 wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 1:13 pmhttps://msubobcats.com/news/2023/1/27/f ... coach.aspx
Certainly is well qualified!

Welcome to MSU Coach! Here's hoping for continued success smashing everybody into submission every game and you help bring some of that Wisconsin beef to both the OL and DL during your time with the Cats!

Re: New OL Coach - Al Johnson
Was the recent Running backs coach - that's interesting and helps with the offense.
Now the OL coach and I think we get three years out of him before he jumps to FBS coaching.

Start going after some of those corn-fed boys out in the Midwest. Wonder if there's any drop downs from the Badgers, with the new coaching staff?

I recognized him from YouTube. Sounds like a great hire! I hope they let him recruit the Wisconsin area and Midwest, they have huge dudes there!

Re: New OL Coach - Al Johnson
Have always admired the Wisconsin program. They consistently do more with less talent than any team in the Big Ten. And everyone knows they have consistently good O-lines and running games. And IIRC, they commonly run zone blocking schemes (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Sucks losing coach Army, but would never have thought we could attract someone with this pedigree/experience to MSU. On paper looks like an amazing hire! Excited to see how this the OL looks this fall!
Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.

Re: New OL Coach - Al Johnson
Wisconsin is commonly known for their massive lineman and deployment of a gap blocking scheme with lots and lots of power. However, they have changed to zone to match personnel from time to time but they always stick to one throughout that specific season. Like I stated in another thread, the offensive line coach isn't hired to run his favorite scheme or a scheme he is accustomated to as hires at this level should know how to teach all schemes and techniques. For example, Housewright and Armstrong spearheaded the switch to outside zone last year because Army felt it would better fit his personnel. Our personnel has not changed and we were a top rushing team last year so I expect more outside zone in 2023.grizzh8r wrote: ↑Fri Jan 27, 2023 2:53 pmHave always admired the Wisconsin program. Okay, 15 responses in on this thread and there are no contrarian opinions on the hire.

I wish the site had a like button as a few of the posts are really good. I totally agree with Phat Cat and hope this young man can bring a few of those rather hefty midwest linemen to MSU.

Waited, we are excited about someone that played for the Cowboys?? Just kidding. I think our o-line will be just fine with this hire.
