Housewright appreciation thread
Watching coach House develop from a good young OC to possibly the best OC in the FCS has been really fun. Can't wait to see what he has up his sleeve next season.

Can you do an individual appreciation post for each player and coach on the roster?

Who knows.. we have a long off-season. My next app thread will probably be on Brian Armstrong. His tutelage abilities are off the charts!

Hear, hear for Coach Housewright. A brilliant offensive season with a rushing game you don't see......anywhere. How in the world SDSU stopped it is still a mystery to me. Looking forward to 2023.

Weather was a huge factor combined with an "off-day" for the team. But I think he had the perfect game plan.

Re: Housewright appreciation thread
I know this is an appreciation thread, but is he a better play designer than play caller? When he's rolling he's rolling. But sometimes it seems like he either loses focus or can't make the right call. Am I way off?
I don't mean to be critical...I really like him and think he's getting really good. More experience will just help what I see as an opportunity for improvement.

I agree with you and I think that's due to lack of experience. It's a lot easier to come up with plays in your office and teach them to the players than it is to continuously pick the right one out of the playbook every 30 seconds. Having a scheme and group of plays tailored to what your team does best goes a long way to lessening the impact of picking the wrong one.kennethnoisewater wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 3:30 pmI know this is an appreciation thread, but is he a better play designer than play caller? I think this is common for every OC, especially when it’s somebody you follow closely. We see the RZ miscues and when they go away from the run for a few drives. Casuals see the team scored 40 points.kennethnoisewater wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 3:30 pmI know this is an appreciation thread, but is he a better play designer than play caller? In truth, Housewright probably isn’t as good as this year indicated, and not as bad as last year indicated. He’s a good OC who’s growing a lot, and happens to have a tremendous amount of talent around him relative to his opponents. I think he’s done a really good job of melding plays with what the players he had are good at, and that’s a huge part of being a good OC to me. He’s adaptable. I’d imagine he’d like to throw it more, but this year we didn’t really have the QB or WR play to do that at the same level we ran at. He’d probably call things differently if Austin or Reed were playing for example. Tommy is a unique talent that they’ve done a really good job with.

One other thing is that a lot of times, we as fans don't know what (or if) the strategy is during some of the head scratching plays.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 5:28 pmI think this is common for every OC, especially when it’s somebody you follow closely. Maybe the OC is setting up some tendencies. Maybe hes sussing out some potential matchups. Maybe hes challenging his players to develop skills during a game. Maybe hes putting things on film for next week. Maybe he made a great call & the players failed to execute.
Of course, these guys are human too...sometimes maybe they get stuck on an elevator and never really get off.
Yeah, the OC probably doesn't deserve as much credit as they get when things are rolling right...but they also probably get more blame when things go wrong.
Regardless, I've been super impressed with the product that House has put on the field all year long during a "rebuilding" year on the offense, with a boatload of injuries, and a super young team.

Yeah, there are so many layers and reads on most plays that none of us are going to ever know where the blame lies when something goes wrong. A perfect call can look like a total WTF call if everyone isn’t reading the defense correctly.onceacat wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 9:10 pmOne other thing is that a lot of times, we as fans don't know what (or if) the strategy is during some of the head scratching plays.BelligerentBobcat wrote: ↑Tue Dec 20, 2022 5:28 pmI think this is common for every OC, especially when it’s somebody you follow closely.
