The optics of this is much like a train wreck now. Great stuff from the other side of the divide. The speculation, warranted or not is now there.

For the program, the best case scenario is that Welnel keeps 37 and they move on. But it still looks shady just to question how he was selected. Next-best is that somebody like O'Connell gets it, but that still spits in the face of Jace Lewis, who is supposed to be the guy who gets to select the next guy. It spits in the face of the whole tradition. Next best is that somebody else on the defense who isn't the coach's son gets it. That's still counter to the tradition though, and doesn't select one of the best defensive players on the team who also fits the qualifications. Worst case is that Robbi gets it. I don't care if the whole team is on board with it. So many people in this state love Montana High School football and would be pissed that it went to a kid who didn't play HS football in MT (he was just born in MT). Add to that the fact that he's the coach's son and the coach went against tradition. Even if the team voted on it and selected Robbi...that's not the tradition. Like it or not, it matters what the fan base thinks. Tradition matters, especially for a program with a deep history. Depart from that tradition for something that doesn't actually make you better and you're playing with fire.

The only not-too-bad scenario is that Welnel keeps it. That's still bad because there have been discussions about it being taken away from him. Any other scenario only gets worse based on who gets it.

We do media every day and things seem great. They do media once and create a potential internal scandal. I think we've got time for a fun distraction.

You're right and I do love to watch their house burn...just wish there were more hype stories coming out of our camp.

100%...I don't know who manages that, but I'm assuming it was Dawson Ahrenstorff that left to go to LSU's creative team. Maybe I'm wrong, but it's certainly feels like it's dropped off.

Here's a way for peace and tranquility to be restored in Grisdumb village immediately and for everyone to eventually get what they want even if not deserved.
First, Mr. Welnel is immediately and rightfully declared this year's #37 and this is done with much fanfare from the head (as in head case) coach.
Next, a couple of days later young Hauck suffers an undisclosed injury that will keep him out for this season. I don’t wish him an actual injury, he just needs to act like he’s injured which should be easier to pull off than acting like he’s made a tackle that he hasn’t actually made. He then uses either a red shirt or medical to maintain eligibility to play next year. Between this season and next, Welnel announces that he alone (cough cough) has chosen young Hauck to be the next #37.
As mentioned by the parties involved some consulting needs to be done and some things talked through. Everyone has some good powerful bargaining chips if they know how to use them, and everyone can win here. Some parties may have to sell their soul and it should be noted that it is not clear if all parties have a soul to sell. Serenity now, serenity now…
