Has VimSince03 written all over it. 8)
I've already made up my mind on Housewright's offensive playcalling ability. Verdict? The QB/OC need to be on the same page. Him and Tommy have that relationship which is why we saw so much early success when he went under center in the playoffs. The most exciting thing about Tommy and Taylor going forward? They were still adding packages as the playoffs were moving along. Just scratched the surface. Hell even NDSU was off kilter a little bit prior to the injury on the first drive.

(Queue Grizzly fans yelling in my face "Yeah but we shut down Tommy during Cat/Griz" on the 5-6 plays he was under center)

Some Housewright love from Twitter that happened last season:

This account also highlights a ton of plays MSU ran during their playoff run. Housewright was ready to empty the bag in the title game but then Tommy gets hurt. Likely would not have changed the outcome but you start playing the what if game. If Tommy's on the field, the offense potentially stays on the field longer and is 10x more dangerous than Tucker at QB against that Bison defense. The run element was basically eliminated when Tucker took over and even Housewright still designed some plays that got Tucker rushing yards.

One more thing: I've rewatched that title game at least 10 times and our offensive line was much better than people talk about. By far their best performance against the Bison over the past 5 years. Line of scrimmage was fairly even when we were on offense. Now...that defensive line without Benson? Yikes.

Slotted in at #3. Dang...I had no idea SDSU returned all that talent. I knew NDSU barely lost anyone but its going to be hard to convince me that those two teams won't be the final ones standing at the end of next season.
Honest question for anyone: is there a strong correlation between returning starters and success? I know there is a positive correlation, but how solid is it? I doubt anyone had actually studied this. But if you have some rationale, please share it.

My general thought is that NDSU and other perennial powers come back strong whether they have lots of returning starters or not. Something to chew on.

Same question for preseason (spring) polls and how strong they correlate with final polls.
What are you suggesting to compare this against? I would guess a coach would much rather fill the room with returners after Making a title run, then you have a team who finished say 1- whatever, they’ll probably want fresh blood. Personally I am excited to hang our hats on our returning d linemen, oreilly, okada, and manning. Woodard is going to have another great season too. Offensively, we have the usual suspects in Mellott, Ze, Willie, and hopefully Coy.

Simply put, I would prefer to have these guys return into their roles at the given moment and would bet that will lead to more success.

From my zero years of coaching I can safely say I would enjoy returners who are aware of the current system. It’s a team game. Teams get exposed with players out of position etc, players who are familiar have an ability to continue to build on prior knowledge seem extremely valuable. Makes practices more smooth, creates more time to get more drills in, etc.
I would look at the end of season results to see if the top teams had lots of returners or not. So, compare how you thought they’d do based on returning players against how they actually did.

My hunch is that the top teams have good depth year in and year out vs always having lots of returning starters. I bet NDSU has had some years with only 10-12 returners, but they still rolled to another championship.

Depth is the common denominator amongst great teams. It cures injuries and lack of starting experience.

MSU - 15 team National Champions (most recent 2021); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

This is good for the at-large bid bubble teams.

And good news for not expanding the playoff field.

Well, there’s a few plays that can go in the shredder. Montana State needs to flood the internet with quarterback run plays — hundreds of them. 😂

Ha. I was thinking the same thing…. “Here is a link to the msu playbook, ranked in order of how often the play is used…”

Its still all about execution, and the defense being unsure which play is being run when.

Travis Jonsen got a DUI early this morning. Seems doubtful he’ll make the roster or practice squad now.

This reads like an egriz post but Travis Jonsen was in fact arrested on a DUI charge. Regardless of whether or not he would have failed the breathalyzer it's not a great idea to be on the road at 3:18 a.m. I don't know if his status makes him eligible for any league/team car services but as a fringe practice squad player he shouldn't be taking any chances. Does not bode well for his NFL future.
