I remember reading that Bass along with the coaching staff didn’t figure that he would fit into the offense (passing not running the ball). Bass wanted the chance to play his senior year so he decided to leave. That is the story that the papers gave us, but who knows maybe there is more then meets the eye.

Exactly. I remember reading one article where his old coach(I think) pretty bluntly said that Bass wouldn't blow anybody away with his pass-blocking, but was a hell of a runner. I think it probably boiled down to the combination of they are a more pass-oriented team, so for alot of field time he would have had to have been a better pass-blocker. Since he wasn't his time was going to be limited and he wanted a chance to go and contribute for his senior year. Like quast said, that is what I gathered from the articles, whether there is more to the story is hard to say.

I got this off of the chronicle online....don't know if it's really that helpful, but kind of backs up what is being said. i cut off the article as it starts talking about other injuries that don't pertain, but i'll leave the link if anyone wants to read.

MSU notebook: Hawaii running back a Bobcat
By TIM DUMAS Chronicle Sports Writer

For the second straight month, a transfer from the University of Hawaii is joining the MSU football program.

Running back Mike Bass announced Wednesday that he will become a member of the Bobcats for his senior season.
He has yet to visit Bozeman, but was recruited out of Centennial High in Corona, Calif., by MSU's secondary coach Brock Berryhill, who was at Southeastern Oklahoma State at the time.

Bass, who stands 5 feet, 7 inches and weighs 174 pounds, began his Hawaii career with solid numbers: 591 yards and three touchdowns on 108 carries during his freshman year.

But over the next two seasons, his name was called just 105 times as the Warriors utilized an aerial game that saw quarterback Timmy Chang break the NCAA career passing record last fall.

Last season, he rushed twice in the season opener before hurting his knee and taking a medical redshirt.

"I was carrying the ball five or six times a game," Bass said from his California home. "They base everything around the pass. I was in that situation for awhile."

The reason to transfer to MSU was simple.

"They run the ball," he said. "I just want to contribute."

Last month, receiver Nolan Lee said he was transfering to MSU from Hawaii. Lee also redshirted last season
(Cut off for length)

Since I happen to live in HI, I can lend some "Island Style" to this thread.

June Jones does not have a lot of popularity with the island media outlets. He has the reputation of not recruiting locally, and letting the potentially good players go back to the mainland (primarily the Pac 10 or Mountain West).

On the other hand, what sort of player would want to stay at a school that hires Jerry Glanville? :-k

1. He wants a chance to run the football vs. watching the QB throw 45 passes per game. I don't fault his thinking since he's a running back not a wide receiver. Besides, Honolulu is a great place to visit for awhile, especially in January & February, but the "rock fever" sets in after awhile along with the crime and expenses making Bozeman a worth while place to live. That being said, maybe he believes MSU is a good fit for him both academically, socially, and on the grid iron.

As a side note, We all know that great defense and a solid running game will get you more wins than slinging the ball 40-50 times a game. Sure, the passing game is sexier because the fans like the big yardage gains (when it works) and the players like it since it is physically easier than the ground game. Some will disagree with me on the passing game but I think we all agree great defense is a must for winning big games.

2. I'm sure Coach K informed Mr. Bass that MSU and the Alumni will not tolerate any antics or lewd behavior. So Mr. Bass better be ready academically and ready for football. If not, he will fade into the masses who talk about their glory days..........

3. Finally, if we truly have an Offensive Line this year, then a explosive Scat Back like him can be a great weapon between the 10s. I love the running game. Remember when (seems like eons ago) Nebraska could pound the ball?? Now that was physical stuff!!

4. I can hear announcer now. The huddle breaks and the Bobcas line up... Lulay in the shotgun calling the signals. Lulay now lines up under center with less than 20 seconds to go; ball on the 40 yard line; down by a touchdown with the clock ticking. Lulay checks off at the line, the ball is snapped and he hands off to Bass!!! He scampers through the right line, and somehow escapes the linebacker; he's at the 35, the 30, the 20, 10 the 5, and shoved out at the one yard line!! What a athletic move by Bass to escape the line backer and what great blocking at the line and down field!! What a gutsy call by Lulay. Well, Coach Kramer says he loves to run the football so the Cats ran the football. First down BOBCATS!! The Oklahoma State stadium is in disbelief. Now it looks like MSU is going to their "Whale Package" with Bolton in the backfield. Clock winding down in regulation play; quick snap and Bolton and the Bobcat whales surge across the goal line!! What a game!! The Cats are down by one. What do you think, Fans??? Does Coach K go for one to tie or two points to win it?. Oh, oh, my crystal ball is starting to fade. I think I see Hairy Man jumping around with the MSU Cheerleaders. I can't see what's happening anymore. Something about stay tuned...........

5. Well I'm off to the Dean River for some well deserved Steelheadin' Also, I plan to visit a loyal MSU Bobcat Nation friend on Vancouver Island to do some island hopping in his new yacht. Microsoft was good to him!! Cheerio, Ol' Chaps. GO CATS!!

Just a couple of notes.
Bass has only one year of eligibility left, so academics doesn't really apply. He could fail all his classes and it will not matter because it will be after the season is over that it's recognized and is will not need it for the next year.

But given that, I don't think that should ever be raised as an issue. He doesn't appear to have had a problem, he is eligible now, which means he has to be on track in his major and with his grades todate. Also, I have not seen anything about lewd behavior, so there is nothing to assume that there would or could be a problem (as with the DE going to PSU).

I'm a half full type of guy and only expect the best from Bass from everything I hear. \:D/

I am pretty excited about Bass playing this year. With him, Dominick, and Gaithing our backfield should be real, real good! Maybe will even get to see a little of Groves who sounds like is going to be a good one. If the O-Line is as good as advertised, this could be a very fun year!

Not to hijack this thread, but does anybody have any thoughts about the kid from Washington, Taito?

GO CATS!!

The interesting part about the options Kramer has at his disposal this season is their completely different styles. Domenick is the best blocking back with the most experience (at least with the Cats), Bass we are being told may have the best run instincts but isn't much of a blocker, Gathing from what I saw at least on special teams last season would be a mean punishing runner, and then Groves is being touted as maybe having the most pure athletic ability. A lot of options but I am still more in favor of settling in on one guy as the main back and using the others minimally.
