25. MONTANA
The darkhorse choice. In Missoula, site of A River Runs Through It, fans sip Moose Drool and Trout SlayerAle while tailgating along the Clark Fork River. Grizzly Stadium hosts the I-AA powerhouse as well as Monte, a motorcycle-riding, break-dancing bear named National Mascot of the Year in 2003.

There's also this:
http://www.i-aa.org/article.asp?articleid=72014
1. Montana
Conference: Big Sky
City: Missoula, MT
Mascot: "Monte" the Grizzly is the beloved mascot of the Grizzlies. In this picture, Monte is riding his motorcycle to pump up the crowd (as if Montana's crowds actually needed pumping up). He may look pretty cool here, but let's be honest. He looks about as ferocious as my two year old son's stuffed bear. Matter of fact, in a fight between them, my money would be on my son's bear.
Rival: The Grizzlies have their share of rivalry games in the Big Sky, but the "Brawl of the Wild" versus Montana St. simply shuts down the entire state. It's hard to imagine crazed Grizzly fans pumped up a few more notches when they can sell more than 23,000 seats against Adams St., but somehow the adrenaline and drinking actually gets taken to another level when they play the Bobcats. A must-see.
Resembles: The KISS Army, c. 1979
Typical Fan: The KISS Army are the semi-maniacal fans of the rock group KISS that formed in the late '70s and still exist today in some circles. They paint their faces, travel anywhere the band plays, and are out-of-control. Montana fans, meet your soulmates! When Montana qualifies for the I-AA national championship, thousands of painted-fans descend on Chattanooga to celebrate and party. The tailgate starts on Thursday night and doesn't stop until well after the 4th quarter gun has sounded. You'd have to be a raving lunatic to be a fan of the opposing team, surrounded by their number. Basically, they are the gold standard that all fans of I-AA programs should strive for. Start studying those game films!

...and ya'll talk about credibility???? A few months ago ya'll were whining because they featured the Columbia Falls Gladiators and the kids playing in the game (naturally a heavy emphasis on the rodeo performers) as the significant sporting event...geeezzzz, they can't even make ya'll happy unless they give homage (even though it's admittedly an afterthought...) to you...

...plus ya'll don't care that they stole one of our jokes about the fizzlies and took it as their own?

Notice the breakfast shift must have just gotten off based upon the number of Fizzlies posting the last few minutes...

thank you. and in 2 years nothing's changed. that was written when the griz were coming off a season similar to 2005 or worse so you can't claim "bandwagon."lifeloyalsigmsu wrote:good point Nick, but that was 2 years ago.Nick wrote:we were already in sports illustrated for the stadium in 2004. the only i-aa team mentioned.Cat Grad wrote:http://sports.espn.go.com/chat/sportsna ... ker?id=499

Re: Where's Denny's Sandbox?
I just feel that you can tell the difference between a diehard fan who's been there through all of the good and the bad versus some who are moreless the fly by night type who came out of the woodwork with only the success that came.Nick wrote:thank you. and in 2 years nothing's changed. that was written when the griz were coming off a season similar to 2005 or worse so you can't claim "bandwagon."lifeloyalsigmsu wrote:good point Nick, but that was 2 years ago.Nick wrote:we were already in sports illustrated for the stadium in 2004. the only i-aa team mentioned.Cat Grad wrote:http://sports.espn.go.com/chat/sportsna ... ker?id=499

lifeloyal i agree you can tell the difference but just because they haven't been a fan for 15 or 20 years, are they not a real fan? are the ones out of the woodwork the ones that only cheer for one sport? yeah it happens. i've been a griz fan since birth and yeah having a good football team to cheer for has helped but men's basketball and all other sports haven't been great yet i've still been a big fan of the program.
would you argue that the bobcat fans that have contributed to 2005's sellouts (in lieu of recent success) are fans out of the woodwork?

Nick, there is no doubt in my mind that there are a fair amount that have come out of the woodwork. If MSU can achieve some of the success that the griz have for the past 15 years, I'm sure those fans will become almost identical in the way they act compared to the certain griz fans that came out of the woodwork. It would be stupid to think anything else.Nick wrote:hey pal it's been a while. not like riding a bike i guess.....Cat Grad wrote:Hey Nick, see what GrizinWashington posted--first post on page two![]()

As a whole, I believe that most MSU fans have a little more humility for obvious reasons whereas a good portion of the griz fanbase has never endured any down years.

I was thinking of Nebraska and Washington as good examples if this.
