The program has been changing, but it doesn't change overnight. Boys will be boys and bar fights are always going to occur. Until the program has overcome the bad name it got when all the football players got in trouble, the current team should be setting a good example and working towards getting thier good name back. However, as state already, footballers are more prone to having some drunk guy make a name for himself by picking a fight. I don't see this as an issue that will every go away.

I've seen a lot of athletes in my many nights downtown over the years. I've approached many of them and talked about their respective sport with them.
I have never seen a student athlete out of control downtown. I'm not saying it hasn't happened, won't happen, and that this story is absolutely false.
Hell I remember talking to Ricky Gatewood the year after he was finished playing, and helped defend him against this hillbilly prick who kept yelling "ni**er" at him outside Mixers. Gatewood never even made a move at the guy, and if I recall the other dude was kicked out.

I think I would be, too. I've been overlooked by more than my fair share of girls because the football players are perceived to be of higher quality.omahacat wrote:This guy is just pissed that his girlfriend probably went home with one of them.

Joking aside, I wouldn't think it's the coach's responsibility to be at the bar with the kids. I'll use an example. Let's say one of my students goes out and gets a DUI. Should I be the one to blame because we might have discussed the gold rush and saloons in class one day? I don't think I caused the DUI in this case. I'm going to say that these guys were out being college kids. I think we put athletes on a pedestal way too often and expect them to be perfect. I expect good character, but I don't expect them to be perfect "church mice." I know Fletcher and he's a good guy. I doubt that he'd be picking a fight. I think Ash has his team under control. I think that the original poster has an agenda.

What? Did you get your ass beat by them? My guess would be, yes you did.nomismas wrote:So its graduation week and everyone is downtown having a good time and two hot head bobcat football players(Jimmy Verlanic and Dane Fletcher) are running through the R bar picking fights with people. As a student I am concerned with the behavior of our student athletes and how they represent the university!
Does anyone else think this is a problem or do they feel its okay for the university to continue to overlook this deralick behavior so that we might win a few more games each season?

Things like this always boil down to perception. In truth, a coach cannot do much more than constantly instill in his players what his expectations are.

Why do people always say, "must have taken the guys GF or somethin" or "why did the guy kick your ass".
Maybe the guy making the accusations is correct and the football players in question are just POS?
Why is that so hard to believe?
Of course I am only implying that people think about the other options here and nothing about said players.

Anything is possible, but I think the reason most people are reacting the way they are is that Jim Verlanic is a senior captain and one of the more intelligent players on the team. And Fletcher's dad owns one of the most popular bars in Bozeman, so he more than anyone 'should' know better. Fletcher is also a team captain. It is finals week, so they probably were out carousing, but picking fights? Anything is possible.AlphaGriz1 wrote:Why do people always say, "must have taken the guys GF or somethin" or "why did the guy kick your ass".

Bottom line is that Ash only has so much responsibility and it seems like he is doing the right things. Ash cannot be held responsible for what anyone does away from school and football.
That's where the personal responsibility/accountability kicks in or should kick in.

Easy answer. The poster didn't have enough stones to offer up his real name. He doesn't have enough faith in his own story to even put his name to it. That alone tells me he's a pussy liar.AlphaGriz1 wrote:Why do people always say, "must have taken the guys GF or somethin" or "why did the guy kick your ass".

How big a pussy is it that picks a fight with a football player, gets his ass whipped, then posts some trash about it on a message board.nomismas wrote:So its graduation week and everyone is downtown having a good time and two hot head bobcat football players(Jimmy Verlanic and Dane Fletcher) are running through the R bar picking fights with people. Thank you for someone finally coming out and saying that the coaches cannot be held responsible for something a student athlete does outside of school and football. Which leads me to my question. If this is the case then why did Kramer get fired for something that was outside football? Hell, #1 wasnt even in the program anymore and yet he was fired for it!

Not to dredge this crap up again, but are you guys totally forgetting about the pathetic academic record that Kramer established while he was here? That's the biggest reason why he was fired.PureCatFan wrote:Bottom line is that Ash only has so much responsibility and it seems like he is doing the right things. Having a drug ring operating within the football team was merely window dressing and a little national humiliation for the school and the program.
Let ... it ... go. Kramer is gone, and the MSU football program is in better hands now.
