San franpsycho is a dangerous place

I do not follow the draft or much of college football. This young fellow is very fortunate. Could not figure out another way to share.

I can actually remember when it was a nice place to visit and on the same note also remember when it was, good grief, what are we doing here.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot in the chest during a robbery in Union Square late Saturday afternoon

Pearsall, the 49ers’ first-round pick in the latest NFL draft, was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital where he is in serious but stable condition, according to a team statement.

The suspect, a 17-year-old from Tracy, was immediately apprehended and arrested by police. During the struggle, the suspect was also shot and is currently being treated at the same hospital, police reported.

Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin said he was briefed by a police captain who confirmed that Pearsall resisted his assailant, resulting in the suspect being wounded with his own gun.

“He wasn’t having any of it,” the captain told Peskin.

“He wasn’t having any of it,” the captain told Peskin.

The 49ers issued a statement expressing that Pearsall was in serious but stable condition.

“We ask that you please respect his privacy at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ricky and the entire Pearsall family,” it added.

John Lynch, the 49ers’ general manager, is at the hospital to support Pearsall, a team source said. Members of the 49ers’ medical, security personnel and player engagement staff were also at the hospital.

Mayor London Breed described the incident as a “terrible and rare occurrence” for Union Square, emphasizing San Francisco’s relatively low violent crime rates but acknowledged that “the data goes out the window sometimes when something happens like this.”

Despite this, police presence in the area will be increased.

The San Francisco Fire Department reported that the first 911 call about shots fired came in at 3:28 p.m. on Saturday.

Witnesses reported hearing shots and seeing people running and screaming. A Union Square security guard saw a man run into the Diptyque store carrying bags, followed by the sound of three shots.

A witness reported being at a Kearny Street stoplight when he heard about five shots and saw six women running. He saw Pearsall with blood streaming down his left arm. The witness noted that police ran toward the victim, not the suspect, which he found unusual.

“It was a scary situation,” said the witness, who requested anonymity.

Hours after the shooting, five shell casings remained on the ground at Geary and Grant streets. About a dozen police officers surveyed the scene, dusting two Teslas, one black and one gray, for fingerprints.

I have to wonder if this was a targeted robbery by someone who recognized Pearsall as an NFL player. Union Square is one of the safer areas of SF to walk around normally since it's so busy and has so many tourists and high end businesses located there. If you look at the crime rate data, violent crimes peaked there around 2013 and have been declining ever since. The main issue with San Francisco or really any major city is that you have to be very aware of where you are, since there are definitely some sketchy areas not far from the nicer ones.

The DA began to look the other way for many crimes. Shoplifting used to be an actual charge, then they changed the "rules". Same with other crimes.

I doubt shoplifting was counting towards violent crime statistics. But yes, that's certainly a problem and there's now a lot of unused retail space in some areas there.
