2020 Montana Recruits - Final Rankings

Post by VimSince03 » Sat Feb 01, 2020 9:00 pm

Hello all. I've changed some things this year. Last year I went "big" and wrote 50 scouting reports (amateur at best) on my Top 50 recruits in the state of Montana. I gave detailed explanations of why I ranked them where I did. However, I've noticed trends each year since I started doing this analysis in 2016. The biggest trend? After you sift through the Top 20-25 kids, it kind of becomes a wash talent-wise if you view these kids as FCS prospects and ranking becomes irrelevant to a certain degree. Basically, an arbitrary number (like 50) shouldn't kick a kid, who is deserving of recognition with other prospects, off a list. I attempted to do a "best of the rest" list later last year but never actually put anything out. This was a disservice to many talented kids who may not have gotten recruited by MSU/UM but did get significant lower division recruiting interest.

After this fall was complete, I began putting together my final Top 50 but stopped halfway through the process. I've added/subtracted ways to put together and analyze these recruiting lists each year but one thing was always constant in my process: I put kids into "Tiers". Those tiers always included the same characteristics that ranged from tape, production, potential for further development, accolades, recruitment interest, athletic ability, versatility, etc. So instead of doing a Top 50, I've put 122 prospects into six tiers. Those six tiers are as follows:

Tier 1 - "Rare for the State of Montana"
Tier 2 - "Top Prospects in the State"
Tier 3 - "The Partials"
Tier 4 - "Safe Investments"
Tier 5 - "The Projects"
Tier 6 - "The Tryouts (aka The Dart Throws)"

Definitions for each tier can be found in the links below along with the players included in them. These players ARE NOT ranked under each tier but instead listed in alphabetical order. I have their best position to play in college listed to the right of their size (some will have more than one position). Will sporadically update each tier with the colleges that players have signed on with. One final thing to keep in mind, these tiers are based on my view of the player. For example, just because a player is listed in Tier 3 doesn't mean they actually got a partial scholarship at a FCS school. What I'm saying is that I believe they are deserving of a partial based off their ability.

Who are examples of who you would have as tier one from this decade? I'm guessing possibly Troy Andersen (coming out of high school, I don't think anyone expected what he would become, but I could be wrong) and Will Dissly. Any others?

I only have seven:

Matt Miller (Helena Capital) - 2010 Boise State
Tanner Roderick (Bozeman) - 2011 Nevada/2013 Montana State
Dylan Hanser (Billings Central) - 2013 Washington State
Will Dissly (Bozeman) - 2014 Washington
Jesse Sims (Corvallis) - 2015 Montana
Troy Andersen (Dillon) - 2017 Montana State
Gabe Sulser (Billings Senior) - 2018 Montana

Roderick and Sims maybe didn't have the careers everyone was expecting them to have (Sims still earned multiple All-Big Sky honors). But out of high school, they were viewed as no-doubter FBS recruits. People will doubt me on Gabe but he was the best player in AA for nearly 4 years and one of the most dynamic playmakers I've ever seen on tape. Troy was completely under-recruited by FBS schools.

The Tier 1 group is a high bar and for good reason. It should be hard to make that group.

Vim, love what you do on this board & the work you put into this recruiting stuff, but with all due respect, my recollection is you never had Troy Andersen any any sort of tier 1 category. Please feel free to dig into the archives and prove me wrong, but it was only I who ranked Troy #1 in his class (overall) and he did not make your overall top five.

I ranked Keaton Anderson ahead of him in the 2017 class and I get to live with that for the rest of my days. However, you definitely were not the lone wolf on declaring Troy the best player in that class. You and about every coach/media person in the state said as much during that recruiting season. I stuck with Keaton as I really felt he had a bright future (prior to injuries derailing his college career thus far) coming out of high school. Hope he can still make it work.

Anyway, I was asked the question "who would be in this category"? I then gave 7 players over the past 10 years that fit the bill. Obviously, some hindsight on Troy's ranking has been happening since he stepped on the field for MSU. Don't know what overall Top 5 you speak of but Troy was #2 in 2017 (again...I'm living with that one).

Yeah, I think Zach Redd is really, really good.

1-Troy Anderson Total package of speed, size, smarts & Montana work ethic.
2-Sean Hatten Great Hudl video & pic of him with his yuuge  Dad during his recruiting visit.
3-Jalen Cole The 3-Star thingy.
4-Taden Gillman Just a fantastic all around athlete with pedigree, pedigree & more pedigree. With an inch or more height closer to his Dad....look out!
5-Zach Redd Following the crowd here

When I have some downtime, I'll release my individual ranking on this class with opinions on strengths and weaknesses for each prospect. I won't include the transfers. For a teaser, here is my Top 5:

1) Jalen Cole
2) Zach Redd
3) Tucker Rovig
4) Tyrel Thomas
5) Travis Yates

Yeah, I think Zach Redd is really, really good.

1-Troy Anderson Total package of speed, size, smarts & Montana work ethic.
2-Sean Hatten Great Hudl video & pic of him with his yuuge  Dad during his recruiting visit.
3-Jalen Cole The 3-Star thingy.
4-Taden Gillman Just a fantastic all around athlete with pedigree, pedigree & more pedigree. With an inch or more height closer to his Dad....look out!
5-Zach Redd Following the crowd here

Edit: Back then, I spelled his name wrong too
Oh the overall recruit list! Good work.
So now what I'd like to see from you is a ranking every year of our recruits!
If you mean in-depth analysis like what you do, no thanks. As I previously stated, your efforts are greatly appreciated and what you bring to this board is great stuff! Just watch your retroactive claims
Really?

What am I seeing is Carter Ash that others aren't... I am not saying he is a tier 2 player or anything, but he was THE BEST Db I saw this year, and sure he is 6', but his football IQ his better than any I have seen in a long time. Was talking to Colter about it during the Semifinal game, and he also said that he was shocked at how little anyone was looking at him... I know he is looking at Ivy league schools for academics.

I was looking at the Griz roster today and noticed Carson Rostad got moved to LB. That was surprising to me.
