Really good offense, really bad defense, or both:
From their first scrimmage:
Offense Flies High In Idaho State's Opening Controlled Scrimmage
Idaho State University Athletics Media Relations, Frank Mercogliano
Gutierrez tosses three touchdowns on just 11 throws
Pocatello, ID --- The offense certainly looked like the Bengal offense of old as Matt Gutierrez threw for 138 yards and three touchdowns, and the offense scored six touchdowns on just 32 plays in the first controlled scrimmage of the fall. The scrimmage was the first of three for the Bengals in preparation for their September 2 season opener at UNLV.
Gutierrez was sharp throughout, hitting on 6-of-11 passes for 138 yards. He connected with Akilah Lacey three times for touchdowns, including scores of 52 and 58 yards. Lacey caught three passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns. Backup quarterback Luke Butler was the only other signal caller to see action, going 3-for-7 for 34 yards and a 20-yard touchdown to freshman Jaron Taylor.
ISU’s offense totalled 287 yards on their 32 plays. The running game was led by Ken Cornist, who ran just three times, but had 112 yards, including touchdown runs of 52 and 59 yards. Cornist and Lacey each broke the 100-yard barrier, the first time in Larry Lewis’ eight years that a fall scrimmage produced a 100-yard rusher and receiver.
The defense picked up three sacks, one each by Geo Simmons, Chris Perri, and Ryan Phipps. Perri also recorded a pair of pass deflections, as did Brian Livesay, and Joe Strayhand also knocked one away.
The Bengals will hold a second scrimmage on Saturday in the early afternoon at the South Practice Field.

Defense ranks up 10 sacks, but Gutierrez goes 15-for-19 with two more scores
Matt Gutierrez was 15-for-19 for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns
Aug. 19, 2006
Pocatello, ID --- Idaho State's 80-play scrimmage saw plenty of good things in it, not the least of which was senior transfer quarterback Matt Gutierrez, who was nearly perfect going 15-for-19 with 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns, leading the offense to several more touchdowns as he continues his torrid fall camp.
Gutierrez is now 21-for-30 in the fall for 296 yards and five touchdowns, with just one interception through two scrimmages. Gutierrez opened the scrimmage by going 5-for-6 for 57 yards, moving the offense 80 yards in nine plays, ending with a perfect 8-yard toss to Clyde Logan. On his second drive, he hit Akilah Lacey for a 9-yard score. He also led a drive for a field goal, one three-and-out, and he then had a drive stopped by the coaches that started at the ISU five-yard line and had moved into field goal range.
The defense did answer back though in the form of 10 sacks, including three by Doug Hurst, and 2 1/2 each by Geo Simmons and Chris Perri. D. J. Clark also picked up the first turnover of the fall with an interception in the back of the end zone.
ISU split the rushing duty fairly evenly, with Turill Engelman getting 10 carries for 48 yards to lead the way. He and Clint Knickrehm each ran for a touchdown. Luke Butler ran the second team offense, going 5-for-16, and Russel Hill, a true freshman, went a perfect 6-for-6 late in the scrimmage.
Freshman Jon Vanderweilen averaged 45.3 yards on three punts, and incumbent Dan Zeidman 38.8 on four. Zeidman was 2-for-4 on field goals, drilling a 45 and a 53-yarder, which easily cleared the bar. Branden Jones was also 2-for-4, hitting from 33 and 45, and Kyle Anderson was 1-for-4, hitting from 28, and missing two from beyond 50 yards.
The Bengals will hold a final scrimmage on Saturday at a time to be determined.

They could be pretty tough with this offensive firepower. Also, I thought I read somewhere (maybe in the BSC media guide) that they have something like 7 starters returning on defense???

Well, seeing as how the Defense usually dominates scrimmages (See MSU, UM, et. al.), and theirs didn't, ISU may have to win by outscoring opponents this year. Bad news is, it sounds like they have the ability to do just that... This team scares the hell outta me, and they haven't even played a game yet...
Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.
