Big Sky Players making an Impact in the NFL

The McQuistan brothers from Weber State are getting a lot of playing time in the preseason. Paul is listed as the starting right guard for Oakland. Pat came in for Flozelle Adams for Cowboys in the first quarter.

Vincent Jackson from Northern Colorado will probably the 3rd or 4th receiver for the San Diego Chargers and figures to get a lot playing time. I remember when he played against the bobcats a few years back what a force he was during that game

Shaun Bodiford, PSU, was running with the ones in practice, and aparently becoming somewhat of a fan favorite for Detroit.

WR Shaun Bodiford was a fan favorite at this year's "Black & Blue Scrimmage", earning cheers from the crowd.

HEAD COACH ROD MARINELLI -- AUGUST 9, 2006
>> On how WR Shaun Bodiford has reacted to working with the first team
“He just goes fast. I see him out here at night running around in the indoor facility, just flying around. For whatever reason, it doesn’t seem to affect him.”

>> On whether Bodiford was awed at all with practicing with the first team
“No, it didn’t seem that way. It didn’t seem that way last Saturday when we got in front of a crowd. We’ll see. We’ll put him out there. He’s earned the chance to get looked at. As a staff, we’ve really worked hard to be as fair with everything and every man. Guys who are doing well, we’re letting them get good looks.”

Vincent Jackson lit up the Griz for like 240 yards and 2-3 TD's a few years back too. I'm a Charger fan and I actually thought for sure they would pick Jackson in the draft that year and it happened! The kid has a lot of size and talent, but I think he may end up always hurt. Seems like he is a little fragile. I hope I am wrong because I want to see him become a stuf for my BOLTS!

I still get irked at how the media and coaches in the NFL seem to have this preconcieved notion that IAA guys hit a wall and can't compete at a high level, even when they've proven their talent/ ablility to do so.

I mean, just the tone in that Bodiford article makes it seem like people weren't expecting him to be able to run good routes when he was in with the "1s"; or that they we're pleasantly surprised that he didn't pee his pants when he got out there in front of a big crowd. Give me a break. I wonder how many great players never got a chance just because of the "small school" stigma.

Don't get me wrong, there is a definate overall talent distinction between IA and IAA; however there are plenty of excellent IAA players who have proven attributes and the "guts" to get it done.

I'm not saying I'm any sort of scout when it comes to assessing talent; but these guys in the NFL need to challenge the status quo and realize that many of these IAA kids are just as good as their big-school bretheran... with half the ego and twice the work etic. Plus you can get 'em for multiple years on the cheap. This is a diamond mine few have tapped.

By the way, I know he's not BSC alum, but Tony Romo (Dallas) is on fire this preseason. He looked dang good last night.

I know you're looking for current 1-aa players making an impact, but he's a short list (off the top of my head) of some fantastic players, some current, some legends:

Walter Payton
Jerry Rice
Terrel Owens
Randy Moss

Others?

I watched most of that game and wasn't very impressed with Joey's performance unfortunately. I don't think he is helping himself towards getting back on the field as a starter. Sometimes I find it hard to believe this is his third season in the NFL. Did anyone else think he layed another egg last night?

Joey was covering the receiver that caught the Coboys second TD pass, but it was a questionable call that could have been challenged. The CB on the other side, #34, didn't look any better and he's a starter. It's preseason and noone is fully clicking right now. I just give 'em time to get the bugs worked out.

Kitna

Post by cat_man_08 » Tue Aug 22, 2006 11:41 am

John Kitna wasnt even a 1AA player he ws in the NAIA and he has played regularly for a few different teams over the last couple years and nows he's a starter with the Lions. That has to give a guy like Lulay and other former 1AAers some hope.

He played for Central Washington, if I'm not mistaken.

Eric Curry STILL makes me sad.
