Sac State to apply this week to move to FBS as an independent

Absolutely delusional move by the Sac State administration. 5 total conference championships in all sports since 2012, horrible facilities, and a city that doesn't care about them. They got high off their own misplaced Sac-12 hype

Very interesting. I assume the Pac-12 is waiting for Sac State to actually build their 25,000 seat brand new football stadium before giving them an invite as opposed to just taking their word for it that it will ever happen. That "new" basketball arena they're playing in next year will surely draw in the big crowds as well...or not.

Sort of saves the MW from having to take UCD. UCD had a clause that they get an offer before any other FCS teams. makes Sac independent and doesn't trigger the clause if the MW wants sac...

In all fairness, Sacramento and surrounding areas might start to care about Sac State sports if they were playing against "name" teams. Northern California cares only about pro sports and "major" college (although not even that much about Cal or Stanford, honestly). But Sac might be able to get a Fresno State level of support if it moves up.

As far a football goes, this is just watering down the FCS even more.

We have won 34 (out of 86 total) Big Sky championships since 2012. Not to mention another 5 titles outside the Big Sky (Baseball’s 3 and Gymnastics 2). Where in the world did you come up with 5? I thought they taught math at MSU?!

14 sports over 13 years is 182 chances. Where did you get 86. They do have more than 5 unless OP only included major sports

I said we have won 34 of our cumulative 86 Big Sky titles since 2012. Again, did you even click the link?

Sac State going FBS is the absolute California move. Spend, spend, and spend with no idea how to pay for it. Then when the program is an absolute mess, they will blame everyone else for the mess.

I only looked at Wikipedia, which lists 5 after 2012: 3 football ('19, '21, '22), 1 WBB ('23), 1 WAC baseball ('17):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacrament ... mpionships
I'd argue if that Wikipedia page isn't updated enough, that's not a good sign about having enough fan engagement to move to FBS

Wow, relying on Wikipedia only for info?
And updating a Wiki page has nothing to do with fan engagement. But then again, it’s all subjective there!

I'll let others argue with you about Wikipedia...anyway, has there been any info about what this means for Sac State's conference alignment in sports other than football?

Going to be interesting to see what type of team Sac State will field. This article mentions that he has 65 players so far with more surprises? Lots of FBS transfers who were highly touted coming out of high school. And he says more surprises to come. They have the potential to be very good, or it could become a very expensive cautionary tale for college football. It doesn’t say specifics on NIL money spent this year, but I am guessing Sac State NIL will have spent the most money at the FCS level next season.

Interesting... buyers remorse
As for recent interest: Utah Tech and Southern Utah have both made overtures to the Big Sky—multiple times, in fact. In March, they got the polite “thanks, but no thanks.” I’m told Utah Tech’s pitch generated more discussion than Southern Utah’s.

I believe over or nearly half of UT Martins roster last season were FBS transfers. Helped get them a conference title and to the playoffs, but we saw the end result. I think the transfer portal works best for FBS programs and to a lesser extent, FCS programs. FCS schools certainly don't get the pick of the litter from the portal. Sometimes, FCS can get stars like Rohan Jones (FCS transfer), Sean Chambers, or a Dalton Sneed, and other times they get a good back-up or decent starter. I know um is trying to build through the portal, but I haven't seen an FCS program have a whole lot of success doing that, at least not yet.
I think you are correct, it could be a huge cautionary tale with potential for success. I guess we shall see in the Fall. Cats don't have to play them in the regular season though, so that's good.

The Big West would make geographical sense for Sac State's non-football sports, but at the same time I bet it would annoy them somewhat to be in the Big West while their neighbors UC Davis got an invite to the Mountain West. Perhaps Sac State follows through on their big plans and ends up in the Pac 12 down the road, but that doesn't seem as though as it will be an immediate option for them.
As for potential Big Sky expansion, if Sac leaves there's nothing wrong with an 11-team football conference and 9-team conference for other sports although the odd number of teams could complicate scheduling for basketball without an even number of teams for travel pairing. They've made it work before though, so I'm sure it could happen again. I hope the Big Sky does seriously consider Utah Tech, as I think they could grow into a very solid FCS/Big Sky level program. It sounds like Southern Utah burned too many bridges on their way out the door to get back in.
