"After Saturday’s Apple Cup against Washington, the Washington State Cougars face an uncertain future—and a wave of transfers—in the wake of the Pac-12’s collapse.

Beginning the first week of December, football players can enter their names into the NCAA transfer portal, and a mass exodus from the Palouse is likely to begin as top athletes eye less uncertain futures and richer endorsement deals available on other campuses.

Talent drain could crater the football team’s potential, kicking off a dangerous downward spiral for the athletic department’s chief revenue-producing program. The consensus is that the Cougars will be fighting for survival with one hand tied behind their back—a fate that WSU is still hoping to stave off.

Beginning in July 2024, when the Pac-12’s current television deal expires, their so-called “Conference of Champions” will be whittled down to two. NCAA bylaws grant them a two-year grace period during which they must add at least six members to go on existing as a conference.

Washington State already faces different financial realities than most of its competitors. According to financial reports from the 2022 fiscal year, the university brought in $85 million in operating revenue and spent $83.7 million on operating expenses. In-state rival Washington had $145 million in operating revenue and spent $149.5 million during that span.

About 28% of Washington State’s revenue in the last fiscal year came from the Pac-12’s media rights distribution. At the moment, that’s going to zero, as the Cougars don’t have a new television deal in place. Meanwhile, the Huskies’ current media rights distribution of $28 million is set to start at approximately $30 million in the Big Ten and increase annually—still a fraction of what that league’s existing members stand to make.

Washington State, currently 5-6 and fighting for bowl game eligibility, is staring over a financial cliff and is currently engaged in a legal fight, along with Oregon State, against the Pac-12’s outgoing members over who gets to control the league’s hundreds of millions of dollars worth of assets and liabilities.

Fans of both programs learned this week that the rivalry series will continue through at least 2028, as the schools reached an agreement to play at the Seattle Seahawks’ Lumen Field next September before returning to a home-and-home format in 2025."

Part of my law practice was Intellectual Property. I know this area of the law. The whole article is copyrighted. Not every sentence separately. It's perfectly okay to quote articles, including Journal articles.

Probably, under limited circumstances under the Fair Use doctrine, although I don't know the answer for sure to your precise question. Only limited quotes. Not most or all of the article. The particular Journal article I quoted is available on the internet, by the way. I think I quoted 7 or 8 paragraphs of a 27 para article. The use for commentary and reporting information is okay.

Generally, publications like being quoted, and also like the traffic that the link brings to the full article and website.

See that another thread here says "permission from Massey". I wonder how the poster got permission. Not saying anything he did was wrong or unual. This is what the Massey copyright notice says. See the last sentence. Note that the Massey thread doesn't violate anything in the first sentence.

Just leave out a sentence or two here and there and bold some of the ones you copy. That's what "lawyers" do.

Actually, it's the opposite. Use only a few sentence or paragraphs. And note the 3 bolded words/phrases below. "it is permissible to use limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting". And don't have a commercial or money-making purpose.

And don't be afraid of your shadow.

This is what people do; not lawyers.

It has been a tough time for Washington State to compete for transfer players, especially against Pac-12 programs such as USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington who all have far more NIL resources provided to them.

Dickert also stated, "The facts are Washington State is way behind — not even competitive in some aspects of the NIL."

[WSU has recently started a small Cougar Collective. It looks like very small potatoes. I don't think it will help. My view is that NIL needs a bunch of significant and large donors to drive the boat.]

It's a great place to launder money, and often its manipulations are complex and require a defense provided by a team of securities lawyers.
You have gone out of your way to provide ample proof that you would be good at that.

I didn’t say “I am” lawyer. I said what kind of lawyer I was. I also said: "Part of my law practice was Intellectual Property." Note the tense of the word "was". That refers to the past, not the current time. (It didn't say "is"). I don’t practice law and don’t have a practice. But I still know a good deal about what I did for 45 years.
