Yea, if he ends up in FCS I wouldn't be surprised if it's at UM.
Unless they waived it due to the circumstances I believe he'd have to this year. You aren't supposed to be able to transfer within the BSC without sitting...unless your name is Robbie Hauck.
In all seriousness, I'm actually glad the NCAA allowed Robbie to transfer and play immediately. Blood is thicker than water, and it's a special thing for a son to play for his dad (even if his dad is a tool  )...

On a lighter note, I'm glad he's a starter for UM. The cats had their way with him last year, wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit if it happened again. I'm sure the record will still show he got 18 tackles... Maybe even 20!
Wasn't NCAA that did it. By BSC policy, it was NAU that let him play unless he was walk on with money.

Thanks for the correction, thought the NCAA had rules at that time that prevented transfers from playing right away if at the same level. Either way both of my points still stand.

I think being a Grad transfer, a player would not have to sit.

Ok, so grad transfer's don't have to comply with BSC rules on transfer's? It isn't the same as NCAA transfer's.

I think its as simple as this:
Once you graduate you have fulfilled your side of the contract that you signed (NLI). Therefore the NCAA, BSC, etc can no longer limit you on what you want to do or where you want to go with your remaining eligibility.

Not that he would go to um. But here is the rule that I am referring to and it has nothing to do with grad status:

Intra-Conference Transfer Rule
A. In all Big Sky Championship Sports, a student-athlete who receives athletically-related
financial aid and transfers directly to another Big Sky Conference member institution must
fulfill a residence requirement of one full academic year (two full semesters or three full
quarters excluding summer term) before competing. During that period the student-athlete
shall not be offered, provided or have arranged directly or indirectly any earned or
unearned athletically-related financial aid.
A recruited non-qualifier, although not receiving athletically related aid, is bound by this
provision unless released in writing by the Athletic Director of the previous institution.
B. On written petition from the student-athlete clearly explaining all extenuating
circumstances and hardships, the Eligibility Committee may waive the year in residency
requirement and/or financial aid restriction for an Intra-Conference transfer.

Ya I knew about that but for some reason I think I was once told it doesn't apply to grad transfers...could be wrong.

I don't see how bringing in a guy like Thomson is any different than bringing in McKay, other than Thomson is a much more proven commodity. Thomson is the reigning Big Sky MVP and finished T-3rd for the Payton last year. Yes the one year left isn't ideal but we're talking going from a top 50 QB to a top 5 QB - it's a gamechanger.

I totally get the chemistry thing and Ryan and I are both on record as kind of scratching our heads at bringing in McKay, but only because McKay doesn't appear to be an immediate improvement over Rovig, who I think is slowly turning the corner. Thomson is a completely different animal though and I'd take him in a heartbeat. Thomson would make us a title contender immediately. IMO he's exactly the kind of QB Choate wants - good leader, good decisions, quick decisions, doesn't turn the ball over and is great in the +1 running game. And we'd ask him to do a lot less than Sac would.

All that said, it's moot because the kid wants to go FBS.
They brought McKay in because you can't win a championship with Rovig. Brooks said it on your podcast. Listen to Brooks, he's right.
Why? Weber won the BSC championship with Constatine(?). Lots of teams have won championships with QBs with the same relative ability as Rovig. And what exactly makes Brooks able to determine what QBs can and can't win championships?

We ain't talking about the BSC championship, bub. You and I both know that.

And which teams have won? Name names.

Brooks is more qualified than 99% of everybody here because he actually watched and understands football. And let's be clear, if the coaching staff was confident Rovig was the guy, they don't bring in McKay. This isn't rocket science.

Dude, stop. All of those examples were from a now-bygone era before the advent of RPO and true dual threat QB's, and back when defenders could actually touch offensive players without getting flagged for it. The game has changed in favor of offenses. Quit clinging to past examples of slow footed game managers. Even NDSU now has a true dual threat QB in Trey Lance. If you're going to beat the best, you have to be as good or better than them collectively. I think MSU is close at most other position groups. But not at QB. There is no way to sugar coat it. Hell, Choate has even basically said as much!

So...FBS, and two NFL examples, with the most recent one being from 18 years ago. Do I need to mention how the situations are very different and the comparisons aren't valid?

If that's the best you can do...you ain't got much.
