ISU's coach Doug Oliver to step down as Men's Hoops coach at the end of the year.

Thoughts?

Must've gotten tired of having to worry about the football team.

My guess is that Doug Oliver has been on the hot seat at ISU for quite some time. He was able to string a few 13-13 seasons together and somehow finish in third in the conference for a couple years. But other times the team has not been good at all. I think he is also tired and maybe felt personally that it would be time to step away and move on to something else at the end of the season.

I think you could see the writing on the wall when his assistant Coach's son decided to go to MSU over playing for his dad at ISU

I thought that showed good judgement. When Casey signed up to play for his Dad, I remember talking with friends and we felt that he was setting himself up to be a target for criticism by doing that.

Long story short - if you play a lot, it's because you're the coach's son. If you don't play much, you'd have never been on the team if you weren't the coach's son. It's a no win situation (at least among a segment of the fan base).

As a coach, I think you are setting yourself up for similar criticism as well.

Disclaimer: I am hoping this will not turn into another thread about Casey and/or Mick. I am not making any judgement about whether the criticisms of those two are valid or not. I just think it is a valid example everyone here is familiar with.
