What a Complete and Total Choke-Collapse by UM!
I turned on the game with 5 min. to and UM was up by 9 and the home crowd was already celebrating.
The mascot was being passed around by the crowd and everyone was claiming the win. THen EWU
went on something like a 19-4 run to end the game. Uh oh! Somebody forgot to finish playing the game.
Now, having said all that, isn't it amazing how over in Missoula they are ONCE AGAIN (BOTH TEAMS) hosting the BSC
tournament? Hard to figure how completely impotent the MSU basketball program is when you
compare it to UM.
But at least UM won't have to go embarrass themselves like they did last time they won the BSC tourney.
I think Syracuse ended up beating them by 50.
Personally, I wish there was some type of "Mid-level" basketball division, just like we have with the FCS in football.
At least when a BSC team gets in the football playoffs you feel like you have a chance. In basketball it is a complete joke.
EWU won---good for them. Now they will go play a #2 seed somewhere and get the crap beat out of them,
just like UM or any other BSC would have.

Re: What a Complete and Total Choke-Collapse by UM!
In the first place, no one in Dahlberg Arena was prematurely celebrating victory. What you saw is called crowd noise, including the mascot shenanigans. Having been in Bozeman a week ago tonight to see the Cats lose big to the Griz, in front of a whopping "crowd" of 3,000 people who sat on their hands, I can understand how the noisy crowd you saw on national television in Missoula confused you.
That said, the Griz stunk it up and are only NIT-bound. They simply choked.
For those of you who like to say the Cats didn't lose to the Griz in the 2011 football Brawl of the Wild, even though the score wasn't even close, then you would also have to say the Griz basketball team didn't lose to Syracuse (as the Orangeman have forfeited the game). Personally, I think the Griz kicked Cat butt in football in 2011 just as Syracuse kicked Griz butt, but to each their own (just use a little consistency, please).
I just wish there were more competitive teams in the Big Sky. The Griz didn't get any competition a week ago tonight, and that sure didn't help them step up this weekend.

Nice made-up scenario there. See, when a team is good and wins more than 6 D1 games in a season you might actually see the fans doing something like CHEERING and making noise! I know it seems like something that hasn't happened much in Bozeman lately, considering your last winning season against D1 opponents was 2001-2002...but that's how things work for teams that are consistently pretty damn goodaucat wrote:I turned on the game with 5 min. to and UM was up by 9 and the home crowd was already celebrating.

No one in the stadium was comfortable with that 9 point lead or celebrating like we had won. Anyone who follows Big Sky Basketball knows that EWU can put up a TON of points in a hurry.
Or put up a good fight like they did against New Mexico and 1 seed Washington, or beat Nevada, etc etc... Syracuse was a nightmare matchup yeah...and it wasn't 50 points either, it was 47aucat wrote:But at least UM won't have to go embarrass themselves like they did last time they won the BSC tourney.

Big Sky teams do occasionally do well in the tournament too. I know I know...it's a foreign concept to you too considering you were probably about 2 years old the last time the Bobcats made it to an NCAA tournament (and got whoop'd by Syracuse by 33).

Do you even follow college basketball? Seriously, you're so off on this it's actually a bit sad. You only have to look at last year to see how wrong you are. Weber lost to 1 seed Arizona by only 9 after cutting the lead to 7 late in the 2nd half. It was a damn good game and quite a lot of fun to watch. You should try watching some good basketball occasionally.
Oh and also stop projecting your own teams inadequacies on all the other Big Sky teams. EWU isn't the cats. The Griz aren't the cats. Both teams won 20+ games this season (something you guys haven't done since 2001-2002). Both teams played very good out of conference schedules and put up fights against some damn good teams (EWU's win against Indiana, Griz taking #25 ranked Boise to double overtime, etc). Both teams will be very good again next year.
You guys won 7 total and finished last in the Big Sky.
I swear some of your fans get more excited about Griz losses than you do about your own team's victories & prospects of a better future with your new coach. Weird...

Re: What a Complete and Total Choke-Collapse by UM!
What can be said about (so-called) fans of a team that goes 7 - 23 on the season, 4 - 14 in their conference and Last Place, that berates another team that tied for First Place in the conference with a 14 - 4 record, 20 - 12 on the season, so far? Especially one that was, what?...255th ranked nationally in assists...268th in scoring points per game...and 325th in FG %Potomac Griz wrote:aucat wrote:I swear some of your fans get more excited about Griz losses than you do about your own team's victories and hopefully better future with your new coach. I mean, just how much lower can you get?
At least the Griz choked only but one game; which begs the question. Is it better to choke one game or an entire decade?

Cat fans need to have SOMEthing to cheer for in March tournament play. It's a compliment that he tuned in to watch the BSC championship game in Missoula on national television tonight. NCAA or NIT, at least the Griz consistently give Cat fans something to do every year in late March, even if it's watching Griz on TV and hoping they lose.

Especially since the 'cats haven't beaten the Griz in men's basketball since 27 February 2010. That's now ten games in a row they haven't done diddley!
That's almost as good as THE STREAK!!!

I wouldn't call it a choke. An 11-point lead isn't that much with 6:00 to play. Not sure what went on in the huddle, but UM needed to stay in the same mode that got them the lead. Good, balanced tournament and season from he looks of things.
MSU - 16 team National Champions (most recent 2024); 57 individual National Champions (most recent 2023).

Don't discount the effort by EWU. IMHO. EWU's effort had more to do with their victory than any shortfall or failure by um

Re: What a Complete and Total Choke-Collapse by UM!
I could be mistaken, but I swear, I thought that the "Poor Grizzlies" had a sports forum. I really have no idea, because as a Bobcat fan,
I couldn't care less about reading comments posted by UM fans. Maybe they don't have a UM sports forum, and this is the only place
they can come to read about sports, I have no idea.
No I was not at the game, but I know a choke when I see one, and the UM team CHOKED! It's called
"PLAYING NOT TO LOSE." The fans saw it, and more importantly, EWU saw it and fully exploited it!
Now, if you UM fans don't have any sports forum of your own, and you have so much time on your hands that all you care about doing is to troll around trying to see
what Bobcat fans are thinking and writing about, then welcome!!!!!!!! (since our Bobcat hoops programs are pretty much in
the cellar, I'm just trying to reconcile in my own head why the @#$% UM fans care about coming here--hilarious. Sort of makes
me think a little less of their collective intelligence, however).

The irony of that is that Bobcat fan started this thread.....on Bobcat Nation. Are you making fun of Bobcat fans for doing that?aucat wrote:I could be mistaken, but I swear, I thought that the "Poor Grizzlies" had a sports forum.

This thread is a perfect example of how sensitive both fan-bases are. The original post was perfect bait for our griz posters and boy did they bite. Bottom line, griz are good at basketball this season, cats not so much.

Somewhere, before the Bobcats were officially out of it, Coach Fish took some heat for saying he hoped EWU would win the conference champion because, in his opinion, they are the best team in the conference. Turns out he was right all along.

Griz drew a tough opener in the NIT. Texas A&M won 20 games and took Kentucky to two overtimes. Meanwhile, the dude who started this thread is turning his attention to Bobcat track season.

It seemed more like putting one's balls on batting tee, and then mocking the guy with a big bat about how bad he is at hitting people's balls on tees. The results were pretty predictable. Re: What a Complete and Total Choke-Collapse by UM!
Completely agree. An 11 point lead with 6 mins left against the #3 scoring offense in the country isn't much of a leadTomCat88 wrote:I wouldn't call it a choke. Good, balanced tournament and season from he looks of things.
Unfortunately once the Griz got that lead they got a little tentative trying not to make mistakes on offense. EWU also got a LOT more aggressive on defense. Once the lead was cut down quite a bit the Griz forced some bad shots too in order to stop the bleeding which sure as hell didn't help. Also didn't help one of our starting posts sat out most of the game with an injury. Having no Krslovic inside hurts.
Was a hell of a game though even though I obviously didn't like the results. We beat them in Cheney earlier this year and they got us in Missoula twice... with much of their team being back next year and the Griz having a lot of talent coming back too (along with some new additions who are going to be good ones) I'm sure the battles next year will be fun to watch too.
On to Texas A&M! A team that struggled against 9-24 Charleston but also took Kentucky to double overtime! Their leading scorer was out the past couple games and I'm not sure if he'll be back for the NIT or not. Hoping Krslovic will be healthy enough to play against Texas A&M. They are a big team. If their leading scorer (a 6'7" wing) is back, they'll start two 6'5" guards, two 6'7" wings, and a 6'9" 247lb load in the middle. Very large team. If he's out they'll start a 6'5" freshman guard in his place. So still...big team. And they typically play 11 guys 10+ minutes. We don't even suit up 11 guys... Rough matchup but they aren't unbeatable!
Hope EWU puts up a good fight against Georgetown too. Georgetown has a tendency to choke in the NCAA...but damn...they play 10 guys 10+ minutes also, and have a 6'10" 350lb guy in the middle. That's could be rough.
