Griz Fans and The Trial
So in an attempt to maybe keep that other thread on track with actual trial discussion, I'll start this one in case anyone wants to continue the other discussion in a more civil manner. Either that or maybe the mods will say that it's already been beat to death and just lock this, which would probably be OK too!
I'll just make a statement with my opinion and see if anyone disagrees with me.
There are SOME Griz fans out there that are more concerned about whether or not he gets convicted, than whether or not he actually committed rape. Some of those types of fans probably post on Egriz.

Some rational people also post on Egritz. The locked thread proves that we have some less than rational posters on here at times.catatac wrote:So in an attempt to maybe keep that other thread on track with actual trial discussion, I'll start this one in case anyone wants to continue the other discussion in a more civil manner. Re: Griz Fans and The Trial
I think it's safe to say that you are going to see some element (probably a very tiny %) of that kind of thinking in any passionate fanbase for any program. It's just a sad reality that some people take their tribalistic identification as a sports fan far, far, far too seriously. Sadly, I'm sure there is some element of the "equal but opposite" thing out there as well, where some (again, very tiny %) of Bobcat fans might be pulling for a guilty verdict based more on sports affiliation than truth and justice.
This trial is real life and involves some incredibly horrific results for people, no matter which way the jury finds. I'm also quite sure that nobody really knows what truly happened between those two except those two (and either of them could be deluding themselves to some degree as well).
The technical discussions of the trial (legal process, strategy, etc.) are interesting, and I appreciate people lending their informed insights to those discussions. I think almost everyone can agree that this trial isn't about being a fan of a football team (be it one's favorite team or a fan of a rival team) -- it's far more important than that.

I may be nieve but I have a hard time believing anyone wants him found innocent IF he is actually guilty. I am more along the lines that some griz fans believe he is innocent even before any evidence is presented or regradless of evidence because of their own personal views about what they have heard or from knowing him personally. That would be common with any small town program. I doubt it has much to do with football and more to do with heresay and his reputation (which from what I have heard is very good).

Yeah, probably more of a case of motivated reasoning than truly wanting to see a guilty man found not guilty by the court.gtapp wrote:catatac wrote:So in an attempt to maybe keep that other thread on track with actual trial discussion, I'll start this one in case anyone wants to continue the other discussion in a more civil manner. Re: Griz Fans and The Trial
I see it as the difference between what I want and what I hope. I want justice, so if he raped her I want him to go to prison, but if he didn't I'd like to see him get his life back. For selfish reasons I hope he's innocent. As Tom noted on the other thread I'd like to see him found not guilty so it's not a further stain on UM's reputation, although whether he plays again or not is not a factor for me. Like a lot of Griz fans I'm biased, I see the evidence from Johnson's point of view, but I do agree bashing the accuser is uncalled for. I hope the end result of this trial is that UM had a student, whose name is unknown, who made a false accusation of rape, rather than had a QB who was convicted of raping her. However, that doesn't change what I want which is justice in whatever form it may take.
There may be some Griz fans who want a guilty man to go free, but to be honest I doubt the number is any higher than the number of non-Griz fans who want him to go to prison even if he is innocent.

The defense has a forensic scientist that approached them to offer her opinion that the initial exam was a farce. She's testified in 150 rape cases for the state. This is the first time she has done so for the defense.

She was a really good witness for the defense.tampa_griz wrote:The defense has a forensic scientist that approached them to offer her opinion that the initial exam was a farce. She's testified in 150 rape cases for the state. This is the first time she has done so for the defense.

Re: Griz Fans and The Trial
I agree. I thought it was usual practice not to do that unless you needed to. But Johnson is also a unique defendant in that he comes across as soft-spoken and non-threatening. As well, I haven't read or heard anything that he did or said after the incident that incriminates him so perhaps it isn't much of a gamble in the eyes of the defense. Another way of looking at it might be that his defense team is so convinced of his innocence and consistency with regard to his version that they aren't worried. But who knows.wbtfg wrote:JJ on the stand now. That's a surprise move.

I was surprised as well, but Pabst had stated early on he would take the stand.wbtfg wrote:JJ on the stand now. That's a surprise move.
Interesting to read some of the eGriz comments that this is a risky move considering most (if not all) think he's innocent anyway. I don't see how this changes anything. It's highly unlikely the prosecution has any damning evidence to coerce a confession out of him. Instead I think it just reinforces for the jury that he has a human side and they get to hear it first hand rather than surmise about his character through witness statements.
Retiring my moniker. It's time to ride off into the sunset. It's been a fun ride. Go Cats.
