Big Sky men's b-ball tourney

Post by BelgradeBobcat » Sat Jan 08, 2005 11:12 pm

I know it's way, way early and this is somewhat premature, but how is Portland State's Stott Center going to look on ESPN in the Big Sky title game?

The Vikings are talented and 3-0 in the league, and they had the best non-conference record. They have Seamus Boxley who is an absolute load.

Maybe they'll put the tourney in Rose Garden-of course then there will be close to 20,000 empty seats.

Probably about as good as the Matadome did when CSN hosted that one time! I think a small building looks OK, as long as it's filled and noisy.

You're probably right-although I think the Stott is even smaller than the Matadome. Let's see if I can make this picture thing work:

Holy Jr. High Gym Batman, is there that little seating on both sides of the floor? I may take back my earlier statement!

Here's their seating chart. It holds about 1500:

Well, the Blazers are at home on 3/9, which is the scheduled date of the Championship game, so I guess the Rose Garden is out!

From the AZ Daily Sun link that Velo posted in the Bobcat Athletics forum:

If the Vikings win the Big Sky championship and host the conference tournament semifinals and finals, it won't be in the cozy confines of the on-campus Stott Center.

According to PSU sports information director Mike Lund, the Vikings are trying to put down a deposit to book Portland's Memorial Coliseum, the former home of the Trail Blazers.

The Rose Garden is unavailable, because the Blazers host a game March 9.

The Stott Center, which seats around 1,500, is simply too small a venue to host a conference championship game and the swarm of cameras that will accompany ESPN2 and its broadcast team.

How about the Bobcats just go undefeated in BSC play

and host the tourny in Bozeman, makes sense to me.

Remember back in 1988 when we hosted the tournament? That was the best attended BSC tournament in the history of the conference. I remember they brought in extra bleachers and made a giant section in the one area behind the baskets. Great crowds every night, and for every session, not just for the MSU games.

That was the year we lost to Chris Childs and the Boise State broncos on a last second layup.

Good times almost!
