I had seen other discussion on this. Combine that with efforts to extend playing careers… I wait for the challenge to how many years can you play if you just keep changing degrees and remain in college….or why should length of playing career be limited if in a semi-professional/professional business environment….and then the emerging trend to have professional “drop down players”.

Makes me wonder why teams need to be connected to universities if truly a business professional organization. If you “spin” off the teams from universities, the top 20 or so would probably thrive and many others would likely go under or be forced to change funding models and commercial support. It could free up state tax dollars and student fees to go back to education opportunities/expansion… or those tax and student fees could go to support true amateur athletic programs. If spun off, athletes working in the professional business model would have to pay to attend college or the club/company they worked for would offer that as part of compensation package. Sounds a bit like “club” models in the UK. No limits in salary, no requirements to be in college, length of career limited only by physical capability, free agent model.

It sounds like got his undergrad awhile ago and takes online "graduate" classes now. So he is attending school, just not "going to class."

I don't see an issue here, what he's saying is that he didn't enroll in Spring classes because his eligibility is up after tomorrow night and his immediate plans are to pursue a career in the NFL. Graduated players whose postseasons take them into the next semester aren't required to enroll in Spring courses to keep playing, nor should they be if they have no intention to actually take those courses. It's not their fault that the NCAA created a FBS playoff format that takes a month and a half to finish.

Good grief people, this isn't that complicated. MSU01 has the right of it.

Carson Beck graduated and was taking graduate level classes. This is his last season of eligibility. Football is a fall sport, so although the championship season extends into the spring semester, a player in his situation does not need to be attending classes post fall semester. This was just a silly headline by people looking to get clicks. Heck, 20 years ago Matt Leinert took dancing classes for his last semester at USC just so he could still be a student, this is nothing new.

Good grief…because Leinert did it 20 years ago that makes it right? I’m still looking for the kid who is going to take it to court because he makes $1,000,000 under a multi year contract and he justifies 8 years of eligibility by taking “dancing”, underbasket weaving, proper fish baiting technique, the ancient history of brick making to say he is still a student…so technically he is still a “college” student so how can the NCAA cause him to lose his contract and big bucks. The term “amateur” college athletics is becoming meaningless in larger college programs….so why not call it professional sports like it really is and quit worrying about grades, classes, years etc. Which is the way it appears to be headed unless Congress finally sets some boundaries and or NCAA actually gets some teeth again.

I think you missed everything about what Beck is doing. Why would he enroll for another semester when he’s done with school?

We had several players who finished their degrees Fall semester, went through the graduation ceremony in December, did not register for classes this semester and played in the National Championship in January.

Fair enough. It just sounded like Beck hadn't been in school for more than a few weeks. I may have misunderstood. And I suppose online courses do count, so maybe it was all just click bait.

The tone of his responses did kind of come off that way but he was in fact in classes up until the end of last Fall semester. How seriously he took those classes is another question, of course! But there have always been widely varying levels of player commitment to academics in college athletics, including at MSU.

Oh, no doubt!

Agreed. It was either a poorly written article because it didn't make that clear (to put it mildly). Or it was intentionally written that way for click-bait.
