Interesting, I hope it works out for them. Big learning curve. I seem to remember UNC doing the same thing a few years ago, but it may work for Weber.

This guy at least looks like a quality high school coach. Not sure it's fair to compare to the Mcaffrey mess, but certainly interesting. I know Troy Taylor was able to use his connections from coaching high school in the area to do well recruiting at Sac, I wonder if that's part of the consideration.

Re: Weber hires High School Coach
We don’t know if it will be a mess for a few years. My comparison is hiring a high school head coach to be a college head football coach. There is a big difference between the two positions, the last Big Sky school doing it in my memory is UNC. McCaffrey was pretty successful in the high school ranks as well, not as successful as this guy though. Turning that high school success into success at the college level, obviously, didn’t work out for McCaffrey. I hope this guy is more successful.4KornerKat wrote: ↑Tue Dec 16, 2025 9:18 pmThis guy at least looks like a quality high school coach. This has disaster spelled all over it. It may be one thing to run a success high school program, but a Division 1 coach is a completely different realm. And he played at a small college so he lacks any D1 experience. You would think a program like Weber would have attracted some decent candidates.

Re: Weber hires High School Coach
I looked into him a bit more after @AFCAT and I remembered the Ed McAffrey situation differently. McAffrey had coached at Valor Christian High School for 2 years, and won a state title in 2018. They had won state titles in 09, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 16, 18, and not since. So while he had some high school experience, I feel like the hired him on name recognition.
Kjar, for only having high school coaching jobs, is actually pretty impressive once you dive in. I don't know much about High School Football outside the state of Montana, but it appears that Corner Canyon is a public school that opened in 2013, and has seen the likes of Zach Wilson and Jaxson Dart play for them. It appears quite a few of the notable players came in for one year to gain recognition for recruiting, so seems like he's more in tune with that end of things than some.
Not saying it will work, but will be interesting to watch from the outside looking in. I'm sure I'd feel differently if I were a Weber fan.

Re: Weber hires High School Coach
Kjar appears to be a great coach and vastly more qualified than Ed McCaffrey was when UNC hired him, but If I were a Weber fan my main concern in hiring a high school coach with no prior college experience would be in terms of his ability to build a D-1 level coaching staff around him. A great head coach with a mediocre or poor staff of assistants isn't going to have much success. I am sure that Weber had those discussions with him as part of the hiring process, of course.4KornerKat wrote: ↑Wed Dec 17, 2025 7:50 amI looked into him a bit more after @AFCAT and I remembered the Ed McAffrey situation differently. Re: Weber hires High School Coach
He might be shocked to learn that Corner Canyon has more resources than Weber State.
I remember when John L. Smith took the job and left before he even coached a game.

He isn't the only high school coach to flame out. Remember Charlie Ragle? He at least had a few short stints as positions coach in college but when Idaho St hired him he was a high school coach in Arizona. What a disaster that was.AFCAT wrote: ↑Tue Dec 16, 2025 9:45 pmWe don’t know if it will be a mess for a few years. Ragle was indeed a disaster, but he hadn't been a high school coach since 2011. When Idaho State hired him he was the Special Teams Coordinator at California. I remember his name coming up quite a lot in MSU's coaching search when they hired Vigen - Leon, Waded, and company definitely made the right choice there!Prodigal Cat wrote: ↑Thu Dec 18, 2025 4:39 pmHe isn't the only high school coach to flame out. Yeah, I guess I misremembered. When he was being brought up as a potential hire, I think the resume noise was his success at Chaparral was why he was being considered. But yeah, what bullet dodged there.MSU01 wrote: ↑Thu Dec 18, 2025 5:02 pmRagle was indeed a disaster, but he hadn't been a high school coach since 2011. Gerry Faust was pretty disappointing at Notre Dame. Not sure of many other high school to D1 college transitions.Prodigal Cat wrote: ↑Thu Dec 18, 2025 4:39 pmHe isn't the only high school coach to flame out. Remember Charlie Ragle?
