Has MSU had many do this? Or is this a new thing?

Re: 7th year Griz
It's usually a 6th year waiver, but not a new thing. Players who redshirt and then miss another entire year due to "unavoidable circumstances" can apply for a 6th year of eligibility to be able to use all 4 years of competition. Usually this is for injury reasons but there are other criteria in the NCAA rules. With 2020 not counting against anyone's eligibility, the 6th year waiver is currently a 7th year waiver.

Covid ruined so many things. 25 year olds shouldn’t be playing college sports (hello Utah schools!). The 6-7th year exemptions are dumb.
