Mike Chavez should really focus on beating his alcohol problem. It's admirable that he is trying to fight all of the odds against him to be a student-athlete, but I don't know if he'll even play again. It's sad to see such a great basketball talent throw it all away.
GO CATS!
It's always a good day to be a Bobcat fan!

My name is Steve, if you'd like to know.

never touch the stuff? Never driven before with a limit above .08 (approx two beers in an hour). If you haven't I commend you, but if you have the only thing seperating you from Chavez is that he got caught. That's the moral of "towing the common law". it's all fun and games until someone is caught and then its shame on them. I know Mike and he is not exactly proud of this, but he is taking it like a man. No excuses, just "I was wrong, and I paid for it"
On a side note I know that I have driven a few times when I shouldn't have so I'm not going to criticize him. Let the man who is without sin cast the first stone.

Nope. I've never done it. Chavez put my family's life in his drunken hands (they live in Mizzoo).Topher wrote:never touch the stuff? Disgusting that anyone would defend a repeat DUI offender.
Stay off of my roads.

disgusting?...Hey I admire your ability to "never touch the stuff". It is awesome that you can say this, but how many people can? .08 is more or less two beers. You are apparently above driving over this, but I doubt you are the majority. I was given a warning on a DUI and will NEVER drive under the influence again. This is what is called learning from a mistake. I am not defending what Mike did, it is a terrible thing. I am not going to condemn him however for poor judgment. I hope he learned from it and moves on. This is the route I took.
But again, kudos to you for doing it right. Seriously, you are probably the minority.

The only thing seperating a DUI offender and someone who drives with a .08 BAC is that the DUI offender got caught....08 does not necessarily mean you are drunk, it just means that you have drank sufficiently enough for impaired driving abilities...I am not a fan of DUI offenders either, I just can't criticize them for doing something I have done...It's not Driving While Drunk...It is Driving Under the Influence, which many people are guilty of, but only few are cited. This is why I am not going to judge what happened, because I would be a hypocrite. I could lie, but I would still know I am full of it.
I do know that getting pulled over with a .087 was enough to scare the hell out of me. My new perosnal BAC level for driving is 0.00 now. Not even after a single beer. Live and learn, that is the moral of this story.

I will have to check but two beers does not sound right. They have a story every year out here where they test the driving of people drinking and I think for a man Mike's size it would take at least 6+ beers in an hour to exceed the limit. Again I will have to do some checking. The bigger problem is that he has been faced with a number of consequences in the past and yet he stilll drinks. Alcohol treatment should be his first priority and then school and then basketball.Topher wrote:disgusting?...Hey I admire your ability to "never touch the stuff". As for the "he who has never been drunk cast the first stone comment" well most of us probably drank pretty heavy at Mike's age but most of us knew how to prioritize and could realize when we should drink and when it was inappropriate. I don't think anyone is saying Mike is a BAD person just that he should get some help now while he is young and before he screws up his whole life. Basketball should not be his primary focus until he has the drinking thing under control (assuming this is not his first offense which I am told it is not).

I found some data:
In 2000 .05% of the population was arrested for DUI in America. 16.6% of those were 2nd time offenders. 5% were 3rd time offenders.
So your odds of being arrested for DUI twice in a lifetime is a little over .01%.
Mike (at his size) would have to have 4.5 beers in one hour to be at .08 BAC.

How many chances does a basketball player get? Players are role models to the local youth and should be held to a higher standard. Mike Chavez is a young man and will make mistakes. I would have run him until he puked and then run him some more for violating team rules. (I assume the Griz have such a rule) A second offense should be the boot. Funny how he just got academically eligible right before this next game. Must be some special classes for flunkies.
It will soon be legal to shoot a Griz in Wyoming.
