Sac women, NAU men claim All-Sports Trophies

BIG SKY CONFERENCE PRESS RELEASE & BOBCAT BEAT

The Hornets and the Lumberjacks used strong weekends in Cheney to win the All-Sports race in the Big Sky.

The Sacramento State women and Northern Arizona men have claimed the 2014-2015 Big Sky Conference All-Sports Trophies, the league office announced in a press release on Tuesday.

The Sacramento State women used last week’s outdoor track and field championship to overtake the Northern Arizona women. Sacramento State finished with 78 points, while NAU amassed 73.5. Montana was third with 60.5.

Sacramento State’s All-Sports Trophy is the first for the women since 2011-12. It’s the fifth the program has won since 2007-08.

The NAU men tied for the outdoor track and field championship last weekend with Sac State. The win coupled with a cross-country title propelled the NAU men to the All-Sports Trophy for the second consecutive year and the 12th time overall. The 12 victories trail only Weber State’s 16 in conference history.

The Hornet women claimed Big Sky championships in indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, finished first in the regular-season tennis standings, placed second at the women’s golf championship, and finished second in the regular-season basketball standings.

The Big Sky Conference has awarded a Women’s All-Sports Trophy every year since 1988-89.

Northern Arizona’s men capped a strong year by tying Sacramento State for the outdoor track and field championship. The Lumberjacks also won the 2014 cross-country championship and tied for third in basketball. Northern Arizona finished with 66.5 points. Eastern Washington was second with 55, followed by Montana State at 51.66.

Points are awarded based on regular-season standings the sports of men’s basketball, women’s basketball, soccer, football, softball, tennis and volleyball. In cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, and women’s golf, all-sports points are awarded by basis of finish in the Big Sky Championship.

On the women’s side, the top seven scores are counted to determine the winner. The league sponsors nine women’s sports. Montana State does not field a soccer team. Eight of the 11 members compete in football. Points were not awarded this year for the men’s golf championship. Affiliate members do not receive points. Idaho, which returned most of its sports to the Big Sky Conference on July 1, 2014, is considered an affiliate member because its football program competes in the Sun Belt Conference.

Northern Arizona’s men’s and women’s programs combined for 140 total points. Sacramento State was second with 129 points, followed by Montana with 110.16. The overall point totals is one of the criteria used to determine the 2014-15 Presidents’ Cup. The winner of this year’s Presidents’ Cup will be announced in July. Northern Arizona is seeking its third consecutive Presidents’ Cup.

Montana State’s women finished fourth in the All-Sports trophy race. The Bobcat women’s track team finished second to Sac in the indoor and outdoor championships. MSU earned 10 points for a third-place finish in cross-country.

The MSU men got 11.33 points from football for its three-way second-place tie with Montana and Idaho State. The Bobcat men got 10 points for third-place finishes in indoor and outdoor track and eight points for a fourth-place finish in cross-country.
