ASU Chancellor's Behavior

Post by HelenaCat95 » Sun Dec 03, 2006 4:43 pm

What does the board think of the behavior of ASU's Chancellor?

He was seen on ESPN riding a board with the NC trophy (not really a big deal with me)

He was also seen on ESPN waving a sign with an anemic looking MSU Bobcat on it that said, "Victim #26. Who's next".
If you're 22 and drunk, that's a pretty clever sign. If you're the head of the institution, I think it's pretty immature.

I'd like to hear the Board's opinion, and if there are any ASU posters still around, I'd like to hear their thoughts.

I don't have a problem with it...he was just having some fun with the student section. Who says the chancellor/president has to sit up in a luxury box drinking Merlot all game?

I was so into the game I didn't give it a whole lot of thought, but in retrospect it was odd. I can see where the school/students probably think its cool and it appeared to get them fired up, so whatever turns your crank there chancellor man. But really it gave the school the appearance that it was way too full of itself. Arrogance, hmm, do I know another school with this trait?

Here's a novel idea...How 'bout we just have a football game with cheerleaders, tailgating, a band, a mascot, and a section for students?

I thought it was cool too.....but think it probably took some beverages before hand. I can't see Gamble doing that.

I thought it was great. I hated being #26 but, to the victor go the spoils.

I thought the sign that mocked the MSU "cat" was a bit much, but he got on TV for his 15 minutes, so more power to him.

Tha chancellor has been one of Apps biggest fans since he's been here. I think it is awesome that he gets excited about our school and leads the cheers. I think he helped to "lead" the band last year in Chatty. You guys are not the first group of fans to question some of his 'antics'.

It is definitely something I've never ever seen before by an Administrator of a university at a game but I appreciate his enthusiasm for his team to try and get the crowd going. Personally that would not "pump" me up to see an older gentlemen riding a plywood surfboard awkwardly but to each his own. I think he could have without the sign that disparaged the opponent before the game was over. Hopefully someone handed him the sign and he didn't read it and it was an innocent mistake.

I thought it was funny. I wish Gamble did stuff like that, or hang out in the student section, or stop by the student tailgates and such. Make the crowd feel more appreciated, and more like the "12th man''.

A bit off topic yet similar circumstances, is there a difference between a Chancellor of a University doing what he did or Governor Brian Schweitzer wearing his UM jacket wrestling with Monte in the end zone.

Governor, Chancellor, either way it was a football game and they were having fun.

I thought the surfing with the national championship was kinda cool, but the sign with victim #26 was a bit much, but still nice to see that he's having fun... Apparently its a fun, easy going environment

Chancellor Peacock has been a Prof, Asst Dean, Dean and other admin positions with ASU since 1983 with our Walker College of Business. Most of our recent Chancellors have been outsiders brought in to ASU. Maybe his 23 years with ASU has given him a little more pride and willingness to show that pride than most college leaders have in them.

I thing the Victim #26 sign was from a student, but even then not that out of bounds to discredit ASU.

And as an alumnus I think it was great when he conducted the band in the second half.

Yet your fans have a fit when one of our players wears face paint (when he has a helmet on most of the time anyway). I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around y'all's sense of justice.

If I could add my two cents worth, I've known Dr. Peacock since my senior year at Appalachian which also happened to be his first year as an accounting professor. He's truly a great human being and was just trying to have some fun and get the crowd going. There is absolutely no malice intended in anything he did. He has a genuine since of fun and humor and even managed to make TAX ACCOUNTING humorous as a lecturer.

Just to add some historical perspective, Ken Peacock became Chancellor last year, and inherited the position from an administration that really didn't support the athletics programs. One of Dr. Peacock's first responsibilities was to hire a new AD, and he brought in Charlie Cobb, formerly the #2 man in NC State's athletic administration. One of the very first things that they did was announce an emphsis on improving the "game day experience" which had become downright bland. They've done so with resounding success (improved tailgating complete wiht family activities, pregame shows, fireworks, paratroopers, etc.

The thing is that Dr. Peacock is the type that leads by example. He doesn't sit back and send a memo to the students and fans saying "cheer more, support the team, participate in the game." He actually DOES it himself. The students and fans have responded. He's truly proud of the team and doing everything in his power to stimulate things. Remember that App is also attempting to raise funds for facilities expansion for obvious reasons (see the East stands and average attendance at 40% over official capacity).

I don't have direct contact with Dr. Peacock these days on any regular basis, so I don't speak for him, but I can assure you that this was well intended. There's no doubt in my mind that someone handed him the sign...either fan or cheer leader. Given some of the signs that I've seen opponents bringing to our stadium (not MSU to my knowledge), it's hard for me to get too worked up about it, though. It was in the spirit of fun.

Regarding the face painting of your player, I can't comment. I haven't actually heard anyone complain about it. I noticed it and thought it was a little odd, but it's not the first time I've seen it. At least he didn't paint his face like a skull (aka The Program). LOL Anyone who worries about this type of thing (face painting) really needs to consider whether football is the right past time for them. Perhaps Ice Skating would be more appropriate?

Sorry for the rambling post, but I have to speak up for Dr. Peacock for whatever my thoughts are worth.

Thanks again for a great game. Congratulations on an outstanding season and the first of many playoff appearances to come.

Greg

Thank you for your post. You have restored my faith in sportsmanship. I will cease to stereotype all App State fans as arrogant self-righteous whiners.

Good luck to your team the rest of the way. And make room for all the Payton Trophies your quarterback will win.

As the leader of the institution, it's great that he steps up and supports his team. I wouldn't mind seeing Gamble once or twice at a game (outside of the VIP tent).

the poster was WAY over board - regardless of where he got it, he should have immediately tossed it away. He's been at App State for 20 some years - so it's obvious he's not 20 years old....
