Booing, your college team

Post by mslacat » Tue Nov 07, 2006 2:58 pm

OK the big watercooler subject in Missoula, I guess is a good number of fans booing the Griz and the AD at last week-ends game. I am a little slow, but I guess people have been talking about it since Sunday. The thing is no one has been able to give me a clear picture as to why these fans booed. I have been at a lot of Montana State and U of Montana sporting events and the only other time I can remember a program or coach being booed was in 1981 when the Bruce Haroldson (MSU basketball coach) pulled a fan favorite walk-on basketball player at the end of a wipe out game. In that case the booing was in jest and Bruce put the guy back in.

Can anyone hear remember a time when a coach got Booed? How about Solmonson or Hysell?

I think the Griz are not winning enough football games this year for some Griz fans!!

I can't remember if there was booing under Solomonson, I think we stopped watching any games.

I actually think it somewhat has to do with lack of knowledge of the game. Half of them don't even know anything about football but it is COOL to be a Griz fan in Montana (when they are playing well). If the Griz don't score on every possesion then they have to BOO because it comes back to them as being not Cool :) You happen to see a lot of this in Yankee Stadium and the Black Hole in Oakland :)

P.S - You could also include Colorado in there too. They don't call Missoula BOULDER NORTH for a reason :)

Anyway, that is my opinion and does not reflect the opinions/moderators on this board (at least I think so :) ).

a few of my employees said they thought the booing was stemming from what many perceived to be poor play calling during the griz' last drive.

My take is they were booing because it was 3rd and 1, and another 5 step drop, deep pass. Swogger's accuracy is pretty poor of late, but the fact that a short slant or something higher percentage for a completion wasn't called.

Phenice is in love with the passing game, and in particular 5 step drops. isht, he could help Swogger out and call some 3 step drop timing type plays to get Swogger in a rhythm. Hell, the completion percentage to WR's going across the middle has to be about 80% for the Griz, but you will rarely see this. Deep fades, deep skinny posts, deep, deep, deep.

Booing make me sick, and embarrased. I don't get it, and I'm not real fond of fans booing the other team when they step on the field either.

before Cat fans feel too good about what good fans they are vs Griz fans, let's take a stroll down bobcatnation memory lane. Here are a few threads that talk about Cat fans booing their players, cheering when a player is benched, etc. Seems both teams have fans they are not proud of.

What about refs?

i agree that booing players/coaches is poor thing and no one team is immune (there will always be some rotten apples).

like i've said in other posts, i thought the griz fans booing (very very vocal on the television) was unfortunate for the players. i'm sure most of it was focused at the offensive coordinator out of frustration, but i'm sure (as posted numerous times on egriz) that the players feel it in some respect. that fortunately/unfortunately is the pressure you carry being a top ranked team (that is intended as a compliment by the way).

good lesson for all teams...

Booing refs? It is an integral part of the game. Even though they probably don't deserve it, many times. They are immune to it anyway.

The difference, Jah, is that the booing heard on the TV broadcasts of the two games was not remotely similar.

The griz fans were clearly booing the play-calling in a couple of situations of their game, while the Cat fans were clearly heard booing only following some p!ss-poor calls by the refs.

I'm sure, since you're on the wrong end of this one, you'll continue to debate but the fact remains that while a few isolated idiots, I mean fans, at EVERY school might boo their own team, coaches, or players, I've NEVER heard a large portion of the crowd audible over the broadcast of a Cat game the way I clearly did during the Griz game last Saturday...

Or have the announcers clearly recognize that the Booing was actually helping the Cal Poly Defense. They were talking about it for quite a while on there in the Griz game that Cal POly was probably loving it!
I'm sure they were!

I don't think you should boo the refs if you don't think it's ok to boo players. But that's just my opinion.

I heard an interesting thing about the St. Louis Cards fans. That even when their team was playing like crap, the fans stood behind them, and tried to motivate them. I think that would be a better idea.

Though, with Griz fans, the O has not looked very good, other than the end of 2004 and the playoffs, and a spattering here and there since 2002. 2001 didn't even have a great O, but it obviously got the job done.

You don't boo refs it is to easy for the players to think you are booing them. You yell stuff like:

"Ref #@%^& your @#*&# Mother &*$%#%^ and @%*(%^& your sister ^#&(*^%$ Army boots

I hope that came through the board editor

Mslacat - that is way more friendly than what was said on Saturday after the "interception" in the end zone.

It was definitely due to the play calling as 3 times the play called on 3rd and short was a deep pass and it was always followed by a punt. I could hear everyone complaining about it almost as much as I could here the boos.

Earle got the hell booed out of him. He was not only a poor coach and recruiter for the most part ( He recruited some pretty nice guys that were DII talent) but he had less personality than Bobby. He didn't even whine very well.

I was at the game and I will say less then 10% of the crowd booed on one play.

It was a 3rd and 1 situation and they went for a long bomb on 3rd and 1. Absolutely retarded play. The kids weren't being booed, but Phenecie was (the O coord)...

still, no room for booing I say.

There was booing at the UC Davis/MSU game this year.

Hey griznearbeer - that first post you linked to was one of mine, so I'll bite. If you had any intelligence and/or common sense, and had actually read the post, you would have undertood I was referring to booing the refs on what was probably the worst call any of us had ever seen. I did not say to boo the players or the coaches. In fact, the jist of the post was to point out bad fans.

Next time I would suggest coming up with an original thought of your own rather than try twisting someone else's words.
