Bobcat fans

Post by 1BadBobcat » Sun Nov 05, 2006 11:18 am

Our fans, IMHO, are usually the best. Loud, educated, and very supportive. However, I had the misfortune of sitting in a new section yesterday for the UNC game, and some very classless Bobcat fans almost ruined the day for me and my father.

I was given two tickets for yesterday's game on the booster side in section 106 (I usually buy family Pepsi Zone tickets so my kids can run around the grassy area and play while my wife, my dad, and I watch the game). My girls had dance practice yesterday so it was just my dad & I.

Unfortuantely, some of the Cat fans in my section thought it was appropriate to make fun of the UNC players after they had been hurt on the field. I could point out a few instances but will pass at this time to make a longer post shorter. They also felt the need to harrass the UNC punter, making knife jokes.

I love for a Bobcat crowd to be loud and vocal and cheer on our team. I usually have no voice after a game is finished! I have never been one to harass opposing players because I have been there myself. These guys work their butts off and deserve some respect for the time and dedication they have given their respective schools. What pushed me over the edge, however, was the interception call late in the game which took our TD away. I, for one, thought that was possibly the worst call I have ever seen in a game. Too boo is okay. Eventually, just like on the field, you need to let it go and finish the game. But these guys that were in my section started using obscenities towards the refs that would have made a sailor blush! Guess it was comical if you lack a sense of maturity. The unfortunate thing was there was at least a couple a families in the section as well that had to leave the game early (didn't want young kids to be exposed to that) because of what was being said. I was even a little offended and don't consider myself a prude whatsoever.

We were close to the visiting UNC section, and after the game I went over and apologized on behalf of our fans. I tried to explain that the biggest majority of our fans do not act this way, and thanked them for making the drive to Bozeman for Colorado. The one gentleman thought we had a heck of a ball club and stated that the Cats deserved to be playing for a conference title. Remember, this UNC team has undergone alot of adversity this year, capped off by the death of one of their recent stars and brother of a current UNC linebacker. Put yourself in their fans' shoes, and I don't think you would appreciate some of the rude comments that were being made. I am just glad that this was only a handful of people in the stands (I have a hard time calling them fans) and that most of us cheering on our Bobcats don't behave this way.

:goodpost:

I'm glad I don't sit in Section 106.
I can understand booing the refs (I was doing it loudly yesterday after our TD/interception). BUT THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR MAKING FUN OF INJURED PLAYERS. There are things that are more important than football, and good health is one of them.

On a more positive note, I thought it showed a lot of class, leadership, and just good all-around comraderie and emphathy for the prayers, hugs, and good spirit between the two teams after the game. It was the right thing for both teams to rally around a fellow competitor in his time of tragedy.

From this post it is obvious you are a classy fan. The vast majority of Bobcat (and Griz) fans are good fans -- unfortunately there are some bad apples in every group. And any time you have alcohol involved the number of people who lose their common sense will increase.

Thanks 23-0-4! I just think there is no place for making fun of a guy's injury. When UNC's starting QB went, these guys were laughing. When he came back out onto the sidelines late in the game and was practing moving on it, you could tell he was clearly in pain. One of the guys in my section yelled out, "Hey 14, your knee is blown! Ha, ha!!" I mean, c'mon, grow up.

Thanks 1Bad. That was classy on your part. I completely agree with you. Those people are not real fans and obviously have never been athletes themselves. There were a couple idiots in the student section too. I tend to bite my tongue until I can't any more and then say something to them loudly. It seems like everyone around always agrees and chimes in because they are sick of the situation too. If they were swearing, I'd definitely tell them to clean it up because there are kids in the area.
