Bobcats have 3 out of the top 4 players with the most penalties in the Big Sky Conference. We have #1, #2 and #4. U of M has #3. We also have at least #7.
Another interesting stat is the team with the least # of penalties in a season has never one the conference title. U of M has consistently placed int the top #'s of players with penalties.
This stat is not published, but is given to the officals before the game. So when there is a questionable call, presumption many times goes against us.
I'm not saying we don't need to work on better discipline and avoiding penalties, but our guys are marked now with the officials.

They give to the refs before the game? That is complete B.S! Let the refs call the game they way they see it. What good does letting them know the most penalized players do but make their eyes glued to those players and miss the action etc. I can't believe the Big Sky does this. No wonder the refs miss so much then.

Thanks for the check; I considered not posting it; but figured it was said in an open forum.
It's a strange stat to make prominant with the ref staff! I would think it would lead to some impartial penalty calls.

I agree, why would you share any information with the refs that may result in bias? That is just plain stupid.

This practice seems to run contrary to virtually any practive by any group of people who are supposed to be objective in any profession anyplace in the universe.

It's kind of like doing a taste test between two beers, and telling the judges which beer was which, and also telling them which beer had won prizes at other tastings from other judges and which one had won nothing. I'm guessing you wouldn't get very objective results.

Great analogy. One we can all relate to. I "read" Playboy (only at work) and was inspired into writing this:

There once was a guy named Jordan,
Who went to the line and scored ‘em.
The refs put him there,
It became standard fare.
The guy was good, they couldn't ignore him.

OK, that was pretty lame, but Refs the world over are human. If you keep telling them something is so, like anyone else their behavior will become skewed. If Jordan missed a shot, it must've been a foul. That was the common thought and the refs fell into line with that. So if the league keeps telling the refs the Cats are undisciplined and commit a lot of penalties eventually (already) it becomes so.

And it's just a matter of time before this thread gets to ... da Oak-land Rai-ders ... and how Al Davis has been convinced for years that they are the most penalized team in the league for the last 36 straight seasons (fake stat) because the refs are buying into their reputation as a rough, undisciplined team.

If the NFL passed out stat sheets like the BSC allegedly does ... I might have to [cringe] start believing that Al might be on to something.

I think they call it social categorization. Continually categorize someone or a group and it'll will have a snowball effect. The refs should be fighting against this, not embracing it. If someone shows up with a stat sheet showing who the most penalized players are, the refs should be going out of their way to not look at it.

Maybe we could distribute to the fans at every game, a list of the referees and the calls that they have blown in the past. That way, we won't have to look at the Jumbotron to know that they've screwed up a call.....we will already know due to their past behavior.

I would love to get my hands on an Officials stat sheets. We could boo the coin toss because we aren't getting a fair deal. I love it. Where can we get the list of what officials are where?
