Need advice re: anti-virus programs
Hoping some of you with a bit more knowledge than I can share some recommendations. I know this is probably one of those Chevy, Dodge, Ford subjects..... Right now have Kaspersky 2013. May upgrade to one of the programs that has a little more than just Anti-Virus protection. And it will probably be in three or four months.....
Thanks.
Thanks.

Uninstall whatever you have (and whatever you will ever have that comes with your computer) and install Microsoft Security Essentials. There is no reason whatsoever to pay for anti-virus software if you currently are.

Why? I've always ran an anti-virus. Usually McAfee....it's always seemed like a good idea to me.CatBlitz wrote:Uninstall whatever you have (and whatever you will ever have that comes with your computer) and install Microsoft Security Essentials. Apple products used to be the safest because they didn't have the market share, now that they do have some of it they get hit with viruses just like any other computer.geogfather wrote:Just get a Mac.RickRund wrote:Hoping some of you with a bit more knowledge than I can share some recommendations. Which virus software to use is really a matter of personal taste, if the one you are using isn't impacting your computer's performance, is keeping viruses off your computer, and is a reasonable price, no reason to change.
The only one I have heard complaints about recently is McAfee, apparently it slows the computer down. Norton has gotten better in the past couple of years, and the Windows security software (Defender, Firewall, etc..) has improved dramatically since being released with Windows Vista.

Microsoft Security Essentials is anti-virus and malware software.
It’s free.
It integrates into Windows seamlessly, updates automatically using windows updates, and isn't the resource hog McAfee and Norton are.

While I agree that the reason they were pretty safe was due to market share, I wouldn't say they get hit just like any other computer although it is more common. I can say that I have used exclusively Apple computers for the last 15 years and to this day I have never had a virus on any of them. Of course maybe I'm just not watching enough porn.

I run ESET on all my computers and have had absolutely no problem with it. I'll probably use it forever.
