MSU WBB at Portland State

Here in Portland visiting family-so we hopped over the river to see the MSU women take on the Vikings at the Stott Center tonight.

PSU is quite similar to MSU in a lot of ways. Both teams are a bit undersized and both are very scrappy. PSU was either going to get a turnover or foul on any possession. Semansky was fouled three or four times for each whistle. In the end the frantic pace almost paid off for PSU as they wittled the lead down hitting threes or getting conventional three point plays, whereas MSU turned it over a couple of of times and missed a few freethrows down the stretch. But the Cats held on and made enough freethrows to hold the Vikings off. Durham was back and though looked a little rusty at times, was a key cog hitting some big shots-especially during a first half run. Adams had a big night-and was especially effective early in the second half. Semansky was Semansky-tough as nails and owned the paint.

It was a good win in an interesting environment. Though there were only a few hundred in attendance, the very small Stott Center allows that many people to create an atmosphere. Good job by the PSU cheerleaders and band who did a nice job all night.

a few hundred! yikes! that is just plain sad, i dont care how small your venue is or how bad the team on the court is. Having only a few hundred people in attendance at a college hoops game is a joke, and i feel bad for the players having to go through that, as I am sure every single one of them played in front of triple that or more every game in highschool. There were at times a couple hundred students at the basketball games when i was in highscool, and yes that was in montana.

Sorry for the rant, i am just shoked when i hear how bad attendance is at times. Good to hear the women getting back on track with a w, hopefully they can keep it going.

If you think attendance at the Fieldhouse is lacking for either the MSU men's or women's teams, welcome to the Big Sky.

The MSU men are fourth in the league in attendance behind:

1. Weber State - 6,154
2. Montana - 3,156
3. Southern Utah - 2,223
4. Montana State - 2,170

Portland State, Sac State, Northern Colorado, Eastern Washington, NAU and North Dakota all averaged less than 1,500 fans per home game. Sac, PSU and EWU all averaged less than 1,000.

On the women's side, the Cats are second behind the Lady Griz:

1. Montana - 2,586
2. Montana State - 1,572
3. North Dakota - 1,445

Everyone other team averaged less than 1,000. Sac (483), EWU (355) and NAU (241) all are at less than 500.
