basketball sweeps Portland State

Post by MSU01 » Thu Jan 03, 2013 11:35 pm

Men win 62-59 at home, they were up 14 with under 8 to go, PSU came back to tie with 3 to go but MSU hit a couple big shots down the stretch and held on for the win. I did not listen or watch the game, but sounds like Flavien Davis had a very nice game for MSU.

Women win 81-74 on the road, Semansky with 22 and Adams with a career high 19. How they can lose games at home against MSU-Billings and then turn right around and beat a pretty good PSU team on the road is beyond me, but good for them!

Was at the game last night. I thought the Men's team looked about as good as they had all year. Davis showed some good flashes of his offensive skills and Moon played well. Hopefully they can continue to gel and be competitive.

i agree. with expectations so low for this team i look at any win like a good win. sure the cats blew a decent lead at the end but they hung on and made some big plays when it mattered. if i was huse and these players i'd be proud. would love to see these guys get a little momentum. [-o<

Davis still doesn't use his body well enough to go to the boards like a power forward...he plays like a small forward. What I saw last night was the "remnants" after the fall of Jamie Stewart and Anthony Bigelow playing more like a team than they had all year. They played unselfish and got scoring out of team play rather than one on one moves...for the most part. At times they reverted back...but it was a good start if they can keep sharing the ball.

I think Marcus Colbert looks like the best young point guard we have had maybe since Scott Hatler! He actually got the ball to players in position to score...they didn't always take the hint and passed up shots...but he penetrated and dished to open shooters.

Christian Moon had a good game. He took good shots and hit them. Paul Egwonu (SP) looked like he concentrated on getting the ball in the basket when he went to the basket...and made some good jump shots...less out of control than earlier.

Before the game I asked the coach "What is Flavien Davis' role?' Is he a power forward, a three, or does he know? He showed that he has some skill last night and can score...but he played outside mostly and made some good moves to the basket. With that body I think he should play inside more...we could use another rebounder...but that's just me....he's probably not tough enough!

Better than Jason Erickson?

I think Erickson was a better all around guard, but in his last two years he was the number one option...he wasn't asked to distribute the ball because there was seemingly no one better on the team to distribute it to.

Colbert, at least at this early date is getting everyone involved like a true point guard. He may not have a great cast, but he's bringing them together. He' hasn't got Erickson's game, because Erickson was tremendous talent. i have no doubt that if asked, Erickson would have been a great pure point guard...but as it was he was the show.

At least Colbert is a good change from the guy we had the last two years....5 foot nothing and wanted to take it against two 6-9 guys and try to score while everyone else just watched!

Totally agree...I was thinking more about Erickson's freshman year, where it seems he was more of a pure point guard and evolved into more of a scorer as his career went on. If I remember right, I think James Clark came in during Erickson's soph. or junior year, and jason was able to bump over to 2 guard.

Also the kid from Idaho (Wilson?) had a pretty good freshman year, as did Ryan (can't remember his last name. He was from Arizona and I think was #4), and Jamie Hooper. Unfortunately none of those guys stuck around very long.

Credit to Colbert, as some of the other young PG's who have done well have had a MUCH better surrounding cast.

I actually remember it being sort of the other way around. I thought Clark was the PG during Erickson's freshman season, and then Jason played mostly at the point during his final 3 seasons. I certainly could be wrong about that, although my memory is fairly good regarding MBB during that era, since I still cared about it back then...unlike now.

yes this was the case if my memory serves me right. erickson was a redshirt during the 00-01 season. that season clark was the point guard. jason started getting good minutes the next season as a redshirt in 01-02 and that's when things began to shift.

Yeah....you guys are right on. For some reason i was thinking clark and erickson were seniors the same year. That was a fun team to watch.

ya they were. james clark is one of the more underrated players i can remember. he did so much more than score points and pass the ball. he was a leader. and frankly...you were scared to piss him off! many times he wouldn't even have to say anything....he'd just look at you. and you know you did something wrong or were not in the right spot. that duo with him and erickson was pretty amazing. on of the better bobcat backcourts i have seen in 20+ years and i don't think james gets near enough credit for what he accomplished as a cat.

ahhh yes..... jason didn't redshirt. forgot about that. that's how good he was. so he played as a true frosh and james was getting significant minutes as a well. it was a great situation because both could run the offense as well as score. loved that backcourt.

Wasn't it the 2001-02 season when MSU won the BSC regular season title and hosted the tourney, and then got upset by the ******* Griz in the semi-finals, after having beaten them by about 15-20 points both times during the regular season? And Clark was a senior and Erickson a soph that year...does that sound right? I believe the other starters were Aaron Rich, Casey Reynolds, and Damir Latovic (sp). We didn't realize how good we had it back in those days, did we? The program has gradually gone down hill ever since.
