Cat-Griz Week
Did anybody realize it's Cat-Griz week? It's discussion galore on the football boards come "Brawl of the Wild" time, yet not a single thread with the double header fast approaching
With that, I will start one. What's your favorite Cat-Griz basketball game of the past? Men or women?
The two most memorable for me are two Bobcat wins.
Jan. 5, 2008 in Brick Breeden Fieldhouse - I remember driving to Bozeman in a snow storm. I remember getting seats in the student section with some of my MSU friends. I remember Carlos Taylor absolutely exploded for 34 points. I can't remember anyone ever going off like that in a Cat-Griz game. I still remember the chants of CarLos TAYLOR MVP. Which reminds me...I need to call Carlos. I hear he is starting a basketball academy in Bozeman like Ceylon Elgin-Taylor and Mandy Morales did in Missoula.

March 7, 2009 at Dahlberg - With Anthony Johnson, I didn't think there was any way the Griz could lose. Then, despite scoring 19 points, AJ shot UM outta the game. I can't remember what he shot, but it wasn't good. That was my senior year and my last Cat-Griz in college.
Can't find the Missoulian or Chronicle story?

Re: Cat-Griz Week
Yeah looking forward to both games this week. I hope the Men don't get into a funk early as they seem to do that from time to time. They need to just go out there relax and have fun! I hope Coach Huse let's them use some of that athleticism to get up and down the court as well as go to the basket. If the men are off from the outside and we keep settling for the 3 point jump shot we will lose this game. We have the players/athleticism 'combined' from all 5 spots to attack the basket/boards as a team and get some hoops/foul shots.
I haven't seen the women play this year so I can't really comment on them, but from the sounds of it they do not like full court pressure/in your face defense (lots of turnovers this year against good D pressing teams). I am sure they will get a BIG dose of that this weekend so they better be ready for that against UM. I know the Lady Cats style is TEMPO TEMPO TEMPO with coach Binford, but they also need to protect the ball better too as the turnovers have been killing them it sounds like.

Re: Cat-Griz Week
i have two that really stand out, one good...and the other bad. the bad one was that stupid semi-final game in the big sky tourney in which we were up by like 20. durham decided to play stall-ball and it was brutal to watch. the fans were booing. the players were pissed. and we didn't score for like ten minutes! meanwhile the griz were scoring on every possession including that ridiculous put back dunk by i think trammel?
man....it was just brutal. and i think that was the beginning of the end for micks time here unfortunately.
staying with the durham family is my best cat griz memory. casey just going off on the griz! burrying threes from all over. no cat player has ever had to deal with the ****** casey did when he joined the cats. there was a lot of mumblings that he didn't have the game to play d1 hoops and was only there 'cause his dad was the coach. opposing fans were just all over the guy. he had pressure on him that i don't think i have ever seen a cat player have. and cat-griz meant as much or more to him than any past or present player. and he destroyed them. i'm getting chills just thinking about that game because i was never so happy for a player, a coach, or a team.

With regard to the first one David Bell (I think) launched a three that clanked off the rim (I thought the game was over at that point) then Dan Trammell came out of seemingly nowhere with a follow up. Best and worst dunk I've ever seen in the brick. The other memory about that game was the guy (not a coach, but not a player) on the griz bench flipping off the crowd while walking off the floor.
The second one, Casey and Griz PG Matt Martin were probably the two most abused players in the history of cat/griz.

Can't remember the years but Hurley making a halfcourt shot to beat us and Tom Domako going off at Dahlberg still haunt me. Kral Ferch dunking at will is a close third. I started a thread two days ago on Griz vs. Cat and it must have been deleted. How are you guys feeling about this matchup? I don't know anything about your team this year.

Just for the record no post of yours was deleted, moved or anything else...not even a smack one. The board software keeps a log of any type of action like that taken by a moderator or a user (in case of deleting own post). Just wanted to be clear there.crackgina wrote:Can't remember the years but Hurley making a halfcourt shot to beat us and Tom Domako going off at Dahlberg still haunt me. My first trip to Dahlberg ever. The women won for the first time since 1976 as Katie Bussey sank 6 treys, including two in the final 2:30 to push MSU to the victory. Later, the men completed a day and season sweep by almost coughing up a 13-point lead only to sink six FTs in the final 22 seconds (where have we heard things like that before) to hold on.
Unreal day, and all I remember was seeing an quaintly packed house and the silence from the UM student section as each game went final.

Has to be our benchwarmer beating his all conference brother on that other side with the half court shot. At least it's one of my favorites. All time favorite was keeping Krysko out of the tournament

Re: Cat-Griz Week
As far as the league goes this year-tonights game against ISU is probably more important than the Cat-griz game. And I have a feeling Huse is preparing that way as well.
Certainly anybody can beat anybody else on any given night in the Big Sky. But MSU's chances against this edition of the griz seems remote. The griz have all week to prepare for us-we have to play ISU tonight. That's not going to help-it'd be a long shot even if this was our only game of the week.
The Cats will need to have a couple of guys-like Reid, Dison, or Budnich to go off-and everybody else to play well. Sure it can happen, but with their size, depth, and experience...it's gonna be a tough one.
The women have it even worse. They're on the road at ISU then have to travel back to Bozeman to play on Saturday whereas the lady griz don't play anyone else this week (they have to play ISU on Monday-so that will be tough on them). When our women's team gets tired legs the shots don't fall. That's scary.

Re: Cat-Griz Week
I'll apologize in advance for derailing this thread, and I don't mean to rag on you, but it bugs me when people cite that statistic, because of course the MSU women did win in MIssoula the year UM played their home games at Sentinel HIgh. Maybe it wasn't Dahlberg Arena, but it was still a home game for the Lady Griz, and it should still count as a road win in Missoula. Just like when we played at EWU in football last fall, and everyone was talking about how we hadn't won "in Cheney" since the end of the ice age. Again, we won at least a couple of times when the game was at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane. I don't quite understand why everyone discounts those road wins at EWU, just because the game was played in Spokane instead of Cheney. Sorry....rant is officially over.Gidal Kaiser wrote:http://www.bozemandailychronicle.com/sp ... 37519.html

One of my favorite Cat-Griz BB memories would be Kral Ferch throwing down a monster dunk over some helpless UM defender in 1987. I only saw it on TV, and I don't remember who it was that he dunked on, but he was about 4-5 inches taller than Ferch, and Kral just destroyed destroyed him. The game was in Missoula, which made it even better, and the Cats won by about 20. We won the regular season BSC title that year, but then got upset by the last place team in the BSC tourney (all 8 teams made the tourney back in those days).
My other favorite memory is when we beat UM in the championship game of the BSC tourney in 1986. We were only the #5 seed, and our record was only 11-16 going into the tourney, but we upset the tourney host in the first round (the regular season champ from the previous year hosted the tourney back then), and upset the #1 seed in the semi-finals to set up a Cat-Griz matchup in the title game. UM was the #2 seed, and it was Krysko's senior season, so UM was heavily favored. They had a very strong program back in those days, and had won several regular season titles, and made it to the tourney championship game several times, but up to that point they had never won the BSC tourney, and Griz fans were sure this would be the year they'd finally do it. It was so sweet to win the title, and it made it even sweeter that the Griz were denied yet again in the process. Then we were off to the Big Dance as a #16 seed with a record of 14-16, matched up against #1 seed St. John's, who was led by national player of the year Walter Berry. I don't believe Chris Mullin played on that team though. I think he finished his career the year before. But we gave them a helluva game, losing by only about 7 points. Those were the days....

Re: Cat-Griz Week
The griz have a great team and a great program. There was not a single phase where MSU held any advantage. Coaching, talent, execution, defense. Severe UM foul trouble gave MSU a slight chance, but even with Huse going with his starters nearly the entire second half MSU could not make a big enough dent in the deficit to force Tinkle to bring in Selvig and Cherry earlier and risk fouling out.
If there is any bright spot-and I know this is a stretch-MSU may have found something inside with Fall recovering from a knee sprain and Allou playing the best basketball of his career by far. Tre Johnson also can be effective and all three block and alter a lot of shots. If they can put that new found inside game together with a better outside shooting peformance the Bobcats could cause somebody some problems down the road.
It's a shame Allou's amazing breakout week happend in two losses. I hope he can keep it going.

If they become a threat inside...maybe we'll get some players free for threes without someone in their face.
