I'm not going to respond to everything on this list -- I agree with some of the statements, disagree with many, and suspect that the poster may not have even read the entire thing before cut-and-pasting it here from wherever he found it.

Regardless, however, I wanted to comment on this particular quote. Knowing the visceral reaction that words like "fascist" evoke from the public, the writer tried to link corporations to fascism by citing Mussolini's definition. My question to you is: do you really think a fascist dictator's definition of "fascism" is the one that should be relied on? The point of your post is brainwashing; however, if "fascism" is to be defined by the politically self-serving statements of the fascists, then I think it may be you who is allowing yourself to be brainwashed.

The true nature of fascism is autocratic rule emphasizing nation and/or race over the individual. Surely you can see that Mussolini's statement is simply a more politically palatable way of stating his ideology; much easier to villainize corporations than individuals. With all the left and right wing pundits, that is getting harder and harder these days. Its hard to even get a news story that isnt tainted one way or the other by opinionated anchors and info-babes.

I think both sides have gone over the deep end, but that's just my opinion. Can't stand listening to Rush, want to have a bumper sticker made up "Ban Noise Pollution: Stop Funding National Public Radio." Hell, even my CDs I listen to diving back and forth to work are filled with political spin. Gonna turn into a hermit and move into the Spanish Peaks, fish Diamond Lake until I actually catch one of those damn 25 pound rainbows that cruise right in front of your hook--or get pissed and use a quarter stick! I know it gets harder and harder to get honest news anymore.

As much as I enjoyed the "Andy Rooney" rant, it's not his.

The above rant was not written by the America's favorite curmudgeonly commentator and has never been featured on "60 Minutes." The text is a liberally edited version of a popular rant that has been incorrectly attributed to George Carlin, Ted Nugent, Dennis Leary and Rush Limbaugh, to name a few. Rooney is just the latest celebrity to fall victim to the "well, he ought to have said it" mindset of e-mail chain letter forwarders. A quick check of Rooney's archive on CBS.com proves that he never said it on the air.

Actually, the rant above originated in in a FreeRepublic.com forum in 2000. It was titled "I am a Bad Republican" and was posted by an author known only as "Bootyist Monk," who takes full responsibility for it. Very soon thereafter, in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks, it was changed slightly, retitled "I Am A Bad American," attributed to Carlin or Nugent and made a very popular chain letter.

Attributing things like this to people who seem likely to have said them serves two purposes: First, it elevates the rant from one-person's anonymous opinion to fact-by-proxy. Second, it separates us from the comments, giving a nice buffer zone to protect one from being blamed/credited for them, should our friends and family members not share the views.

BreakTheChain.org recommends against forwarding the work of another person (whether it be correctly or falsely attributed). E-mail is not a reliable format and every recipient is free to alter the message anyway he sees fit. Even when the source is known and verifiable, there is often no way to know if the text is unchanged from its original or that it was intended for broad distribution. Break this chain.

This misquote has been corroborated by truthorfiction.com, snopes.com, and pretty much every urban legend site on the 'Net.
