Big Week for MSU Basketball!

Post by mslacat » Sun Apr 10, 2005 5:27 pm

It is really going to be a big week for MSU basketball. Maybe one of the Biggest in
recent years. What happens will effect the state of the Mens and women’s programs for
many years to come.

The Women’s program: By now the choice for our new women's head coach has most
likely been made and the Admin. is trying to work out all the detail of contracts. If it is
Kudnra he may be on his way to have a nice recruiting class for the spring put together.
If it is one of the other candidates it could be a mad scramble to try to keep Kudnra's
recruits and/or sign a multitude of players needed to even attempt to be competitive next
year. In the short term Kudnra is the safe choice, but in the long term its a crap shoot as
to who can build this program back up to where it should be.

The Men's Program: We have a team that on paper is said to be the odds on favorite to
win the conference. In reality I hear the folk at MSU feel in order to do so we have to get
better in two areas. 1. Depth and 2 Rebounding. They also, I hear, want to bring on
board 1 or 2 players with college experience (JC's) that can create some compition among
the returning players. The other side of the picture is that they are also trying to recruit
for when the existing group of seniors to be graduate.

Reported Commitments:

Chawn Johnson 6-8 of Antelope Valley High School in California
Jacques Wilson 6-1 point guard of Century High School in Pocatello

Other reported players who I hear we are still interested:

Chaz Dykes, a 6-4 junior college guard (our #1 choice for an experienced Guard)
David Cernin a 6-2 highschool combo guard from Oregon (An outstanding shooter, but
down on our list a little)
Branden Johnson 6-8 High school Yakima Washington (an outstanding F/C prospect , but
will we sign him over a JC big Man?)
Derek Lorenzen 6-5 guard Galena NV High School (A great kid who can shoot the 3 and
post up guards, already said he would love to come to MSU but will he fit into our
recruiting plans)
Tommy Craddock 6-8 High school from Washington (Great talent but may have to go the
JC route before D-1)
I have no solid leads on any JC big players other than I hear that most of the JC we are
looking at are out of California.

I think with our two freshman we have gone a long way to solidifying our future but I am
going to be real curious as to how we do on the JC front. Right now I think our JC
recruiting looks a little suspect. Prove me wrong Coaches.

It will be very interesting to see who Fields chooses for the WBB job. With the whole stability thing they've been talking about, I'd think that Kudrna is probably the favorite, but the other candidates seem very impressive as well from what I've read and heard from people who went to the public Q/A sessions. Whoever is getting the job is inheriting a young team with some talented players...if they can sign a quality big player or two to go with the good young guards, MSU could definitely be competing for championships again by '06/'07. Will be interesting to say the least to see what kind of recruting class the new coach will be able to sign this year.

My bet the WBB coach will be Binford, they are supposed to announce today. If she is the choice, as the sports news announced last night she would be, then welcome to Bobcat land. I am looking forward to a strong WBB program starting in 2005. Go Cats.
