New HS QB?

I just caught the end of the Helena news today, but Al Marks reported that MSU has signed a HS QB. I did not catch a name, but evidently he is from out of state and set all kinds of records at his HS. He is coming to MSU at least partly because he wants to go into architecture.

Marks also reported that Mark Mariani, wide recever from Havre will be walking on at um. I could be wrong, but I see another um to Carroll College connection in a couple of years.

YIKES....I don't think that anyone has every played on the football team and also completed an architecture degree (mslacat?). Those are two HUGE commitments. Good luck, and welcome to the family...whoever you are.

I actually think there was one football player that was getting his degree in Architecture while I was in Bozeman. I can't think of the name off the top of my head, but I will get back to you on it in the morning.

I caught the Helena news again. His name is Van Gordon and he is from the Lake Tahoe area. But then Al Marks said that the Cats were going to try him at wide receiver??? Maybe something will be in the paper tomorrow!

I did a bit of searching online and couldn't come up with much. His first name is Mikey, and he is from South Tahoe High School. It looks like they were not a good team at all. Pretty strong offensively, but very weak on the defensive side of the ball. I couldn't find any height/weight or statistical numbers.

There was never a Architecture guy when I played. There was 2-3 that started out in Architecture, but then they realized that it wasn't going to work out...

Mike was all everything for South Tahoe and carried the team to the playoffs behind his running and passing. He was the only QB to pass for over 2000 yards and placed 2nd in the state in touchdown passes.

Two of the most-talented football players in South Tahoe High history didn't have recruiters calling them at all hours of the night and their family mail boxes constantly stuffed with enticing letters.

Consequently, record-setting quarterback Mikey Van Gorden and booming placekicker Matt Bobman had to find their own way into college football.

On Wedneday, the 6-foot Van Gorden announced he will walk on at Montana State of the Big Sky Conference while Bobman will stay closer to home and walk on for Chris Ault at Nevada.

"The biggest factor was academics. I want to be an architect and they have a great architecture program and a great football program there, too," Van Gorden said.

The chance to earn a scholarship as a freshman was the deciding factor in Bobman choosing Nevada.

"It was pretty frustrating because I felt like I should have gotten more looks," Bobman said. "Nevada's coach offered a walk-on spot with the potential to earn a scholarship and it's a great offer and I think I'll make the most of it."

Wolf Pack head coach Chris Ault and assistant head coach Ken Wilson weren't immediately able to return calls to their offices on Wednesday night.

Van Gorden shattered nearly every passing record at South Tahoe High, even though opposing defenses knew the 6-foot signal caller was going to pass almost every down. He passed for 2,400 yards and a Northern Nevada League record-tying 27 touchdown passes. Each mark is a school record as well.

Montana State's initial plans for Van Gorden reportedly don't require him to get behind center.

"They never said you're going to play quarterback or anything. They want to try and find a position for me. Their (tight ends) coach told me they'd try me at receiver because they are short on receivers, but that could change. I just want to play at the next level."

St. Joseph's College of Rensselaer, Ind., expressed the most interest in Van Gorden as a quarterback, but Van Gorden preferred to go to a bigger school that met his academic needs.

"St. Joe's didn't really have what I wanted and it's smaller than our high school," Van Gorden said.

Relinquishing the quarterback duties won't cause Van Gorden too much suffering.

"The quarterback has to take so much more on them than say a DB or a receiver," Van Gorden said. "You're still thinking a lot but you don't have to worry about how the line is doing, if the running back is going to block, what routes the receivers will run and checking off plays."

With Damon Fine exhausting his eligibility last fall, the Wolf Pack will need a new placekicker. Freshman redshirt Brett Jaekle, a 6-4, 225-pounder from Bonanza High in Las Vegas, is the only returning placekicker in the program.

"I'm pretty relieved that I'm not checking my mail every day and hoping something is there," Bobman said. "And I can tell coaches from several smaller schools that were pursuing me that they can stop because I have made a decision."

Bobman connected on 48- and 47-yard field goals last year but really shined on his kickoffs. Nearly 75 percent of his kickoffs were touchbacks as he routinely pounded the ball out of the end zone.

42% completion percentage I'm pretty sure this kid will not be playing QB for the CATS. I'm all for bringing in 'athletes' though and putting them in other positions though.

Every team needs a Scout team quarterback however and I don't see one on the CATs this year with Carpenter and Coppack Red-Shirt Sophs and Last Year's red-shirt QB leaving. We didn't get a QB in the signing class I believe

So is he a prefered walk-on or a non perfered walk-on?

You know I think all prefered walk-ons should get a arm band on their uni's saying "I am Prefered"

Sounds like another Brent Owens...however Owens wanted the cahnce to play QB. this kids might be a good student who is an athlete. If he wants to go for the acedemics, and sticks with it...he's already a success. If he has dreams of being a D-1 QB..or even a receiver and "by the way" will be going to study architecture...he may be biting off more than he can chew!

A 42% completion percentage may m\not be too bad if everyone knew he was going to pass. He does look a little small for a D-1 Qb though! I hope he's fast!

Looks like maybe we should have went after the kicker as well. Wouldn't it be cool to have a player named Bobman.. "Bobman the Bobcat booms another out ..."

Aren't we all Bobmen in here?

...Owens came from a double a program in Georgia, arguably the weakest of the five divisions and I can't understand who shipped him up here
