High School prospect

Post by BobCatFan » Mon Feb 21, 2005 5:53 pm

I was speaking with a friend and he tells me that Glendive has a 6'8 sphomore starting at a center. I think his name is Selvig which would make him the coach's son and nephew to the lady Friz head coach.

Does anybody have inside scoop on him?

He is going to be worth watching. He seems to be still growing and is actually more of a guard than a center. He's pretty skinny right now, but his dad is a big man so I'm sure he will put on weight when he stops growing. Both his parents were good players I believe (Doug was his dad and he is still better than most) and the kid has been around the gym as long as he has been in Glendive so I would think he has a pretty good knowledge of the game. I haven't got to see him play this year because he was out with a broken wrist for a while, but he will be back for post season play. Unfortunately, with his uncle coaching at um and his dad having played there I would think they have the inside track if he pans out.

the cats don't need anymore big guy swing players who just play out side. They need rebounders and scorers who can go in and outside. And I think the sophomore from Great Falls. Howard is his name, is a good fit for the Cat's future. Rebounding is in his genes. Mom is Kathleen (McGlaughlin) Howard. Schools All-Time Leader in Rebounding and Scoring.

He might not go to UM. I will give a reason why. His cousin, Matt is a senior at Scobey High and plays guard there. He is about 5'10" or so, but he is planning on going to MSU to be an engineer. He is the son of Dave Selvig, who is the youngest of the three Selvig brothers (Robin, Doug, and Dave). If he is close to Matt, he might end up coming here.

Right now, from what I am hearing , Bobby Howard of Great Falls is the top prospect in
the Sophomore class. 6-8 Jeff Edward’s of Butte and Selvig are definitely on the watch
list because of their size and potential, but Howard is doing it right now with a solid
Sophomore year and leading his team in scoring and rebounding. With a very weak
Junior class (I can not think of one D-1 prospect). I think Howard is going to get a lot of
attention over the next two year. Best yet I did not know it until, Excatson, pointed out
he is Kathleen McGlaughlin's son, one of my all time favorite womans basketball player. Of
the three kids mentioned Howard is the closest to a sure fire D-1 recruit, but history
shows that before this class graduates, at least one of the athletes will drop off the list and
a few more athletes will emerge.

As a rule of thumb those d-1 players who emerge late in their career generally happens in
the AA, on the other side D-1 players in the A,B,& C are expected to start "staring" early
in their High school career.
