Presidents Cup Update - Dec. 30
Montana State holds the lead entering the spring sports season for the Sterling Savings Big Sky Presidents Cup. The Sterling Savings Presidents Cup is an annual award that recogzines a combination of academic and athletic achievement.
Points have been awarded for team performances during the fall and Montana State is averaging 13.5 points per sport. The Bobcats are followed by Eastern Washington with 12.8 points per sport and The University of Montana with 10.4 points per sport. Points are determined based on a team finish in the regular-season Big Sky standings for soccer, volleyball and football, while points are awarded in men’s and women’s cross country by virtue of finish at the Big Sky Championship.
The Big Sky also awards men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies. The All-Sports Trophies are based solely on team points awarded in conference sponsored sports. Eastern Washington leads the women’s race with 13.3 points per sport, followed by Montana State at 13.0 points per sport. The University of Montana leads the men’s side with an average of 14.5 points per sport, followed by Montana State with 14 points per sport.
This is the second year that women’s soccer has been included in the Presidents Cup and All-Sports Trophy Standings. By adding women’s soccer to the points total, teams are ranked according to average points per sport rather than total points accumulated.
Men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophy points are just two of the five criteria in determining the winner of the Sterling Savings Presidents Cup, which will be awarded in June. Other established criteria are individual team grade point averages, graduation rates and number of all-conference performers with grade point averages above 3.0.
The Presidents Cup is unique in collegiate athletics in that it reinforces the Big Sky Conference’s dedication to the academic side of being a student-athlete. Weber State has won the only two Sterling Savings Presidents Cups awarded. The Wildcats will keep the Cup throughout the 2004-05 academic year.
Below are the current standings for the Presidents Cup and the women’s and men’s All-Sports Trophies:

Considering the rest of the 'Sky, Montana State should be in the top two every year. Montana State needs to aim higher than better than average in a lower-tier conference.CARDIAC_CATS wrote:Sweeet, like I have been saying all week .... MSU is one of the CROWN JEWELS for schools in the Big Sky and I expect us to be up there in the top 4 every year.
